Mouse cursor jumps and clicks randomly

Bug Description

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and from time to time my cursor jumps erratically, clicking and opening stuff. I tried disabling desktop effects, thinking that it might be related to compiz. I have to mention that this happens on a desktop computer, not on a laptop. I am using an optical mouse that works fine on Windows XP. I only have this issue on Ubuntu 10.10.

I've noticed that pressing ESC or Ctrl will stop the cursor from jumping for awhile but it starts again after a few seconds.

Hey Daniel,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)

I am having the same problem after deleting maverick and installing natty.
I am using a HP Touchsmart tx2 and originally thought it might be the touchscreen playing up but after reading other responses it seems it might not be that. I never mad the probem in maverick and seems to occur in natty on the Live CD and on my installation.

This is still present in 12.04. It's definitely an X bug as it is across other distros as well.

This report has a potential explanation and patch fix but I have no idea how to apply it to test: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18668

This issue seems to be present in 12.10 amd64 as well, and makes dragging windows and selecting text almost impossible running as a guest OS in virtualbox 4.2.4 r81684 with current virtualbox guest utils. Kernel modules recompiled on this box without DKMS, as I couldn't get anything else to work.

Daniel Voicu, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-evdev REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

I am having this same issue with my Thinkpad W510 Touchscreen (Wacom). https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/1321351

If you google for HP TouchSmart Phantom Touches then you will get reports of others having this issue. This being said I don't think it is software related.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/HP-Envy-Touchsmart-15-Ghost-touch/td-p/2870001

A temp fix to see if it is your touchscreen is next time it happens, open a console and type "xinput list" to get a list of devices, then grab the numeric ID, say 15 for instance. Then run "xinput disable 15". Your issues should immediately stop. It sucks, I know.

But note that I marked it as incomplete because I don't think anything can be done about it on a software level.
