Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information.
At a minimum, we need:
1. The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd'.
2. The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy package_name' or by checking in Synaptic.
Also, what exactly doesn't work for you? What happens if you press Keys with Alt Gr?
Sometimes, I had the problem with the Alt Gr key here too. By changing some settings in the Options dialog of the Layout tab in the keyboard control panel, I managed to make the Alt Gr key work again. You could try by changing the shortcut defined to change the keyboard layout.
eliberatorM, I'm unable to reproduce your problem on Ubuntu 11.04. I need to know what software versions you are running.
Please open a terminal and run these two lines.
Francesco, I've played with the 3rd Level Keyboard options, but couldn't break onboard. AltGr always switches the key labels for me. Do you remember what you did to make it fail?
Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what I did. I just played with the options, too and was able to reproduce the problem in maverick, but not in natty. (I am using onboard from the word completion branch, but I don't think it to be relevant.)
In fact, the Alt Gr key did not change the layout, when I activated the "Right Alt" checkbox in "keys to change layout" in the Options dialog of the Keyboard control panel.
However, the settings of the Options seem not to stick; thus I closed and reopened the Keyboard dialog after the changes to verify. Moreover, I also quitted and restarted onboard after the changes.
Finally, for your information: I am also using 3 layouts: Belgium, Switzerland French and Germany. However, to change layouts, I don't use the keyboard shortcut, I use the indicator in the top menubar.
What is the shortcut that is defined on your system to switch layout? To see it, open the "System Settings" -> "Keyboard" control panel" -> "Layouts" tab -> "Options" -> "Keys to change layout". By activating "Right Alt" and applying it system wide, I was able to reproduce your problem today in maverick.
>(I am using onboard from the word completion branch, but I don't think it to be relevant.)
Francesco, better use the main branch for testing. The delta has become quite large and there may be subtle differences. The recent memory leak wasn't in the wc brach for example.
Same problem here.
Ubuntu 11.10, onboard version 0.96.1-0ubuntu0.1, Polish/qwerty keyboard layout.
I tried Francesco's suggestion, and while it did fix the Alt Gr problem in onboard, it breaks the regular keyboard (which is a problem, since I have one of those netbook-tablet convertibles and use onboard for input while in "tablet mode", but regular keyboard in "netbook mode").
(Computer: Lenovo S10-3t)
I might look into the onboard layout files and come up with a fix, ie. hack the Alt Gr button to show a page with all the Alt stuff that should be there. If I succeed, I might post it here, but this is just a maybe.
I'm suffering the AltGr problem eliberatorM comment in #3: AltGr does work, but pressing that key doesn't modify the keyboard. I'm using onboard trunk revision 1276 in arch linux 64 bits, and my only locale is es_ES.
