Unfortunately I can't commit that into the bzr branch, but this is quite heavily out of sync with the maverick package anyway, so I'm just going to attach these as a patch here. But they will be imported and re-exported from Launchpad eventually anyway.

The build process is a bit convoluted: First we need to update ubuntu-docs, then let that build and import the "static translations" tarball into Rosetta. Then we can grab that to update language-pack-gnome-zh-base, which ships the actually translated contents.

Note that we don't actually need the ubuntu-docs SRU, it was just a vehicle to generate the updated XML files. The langpack is the important bit.

Kyle, Aron, can the two of you please discuss that? I have no clue about the quality of the translations, I'm afraid. Thanks!

As I've discussed with David (dpm), these translations are from a Canonical OEM project, but the quality is bad. The translation agency seems didn't have any QA process.

I apologize for the confusion here, and take responsibility for it.

The bottom line is:
 * The language-pack can be removed from proposed
 * Ubuntu-docs can be repushed, reverted to its former state
 * We can, through David, provide the new completed, but poor quality, translations to the community for their review and use, through some appropriate channel

There is an agreement that David and I have reached (on 12 Dec):
    1. OEM translations are uploaded to Launchpad (probably Monday next
       week)
    2. David notify Aron when the upload happens (also probably Monday
       next week)
    3. Ubuntu Simplified Chinese Translators team team review them in their
own time if they like, without any deadlines
    4. The translations, along with all other community changes in
other packages, are exported in the weekly language pack
tarballs [2] as usual (on Tuesday, finishing on Wednesday, as
       per the schedule [3])
    5. The language packs are built in the weekly PPA [4] as usual (on
       Wednesday, finishing Thursday)
    6. OEM copies those language packs from the PPA and uses them for
their project. They will _not_ be released to maverick-proposed
or maverick-updates until the Ubuntu Simplified Chinese team
have given their sign-off, on the next round of language pack
       updates [5]

As in the previous comment:
 * OEM translations should not be accepted to -proposed nor -updates, they should be released in a private PPA
 * OEM translations should be uploaded to Launchpad in favor of building them into weekly PPA
 * OEM translations should be released only after Ubuntu Simplified Chinese Translators approve them

That sounds fine. Sorry for the confusion that this created.

There is nothing to be reverted and it's all good, just a bit of confusion, as far as I can tell.

Aron told me about his concerns on quality this morning and I raised this with Kyle. Aron and the Simplified Chinese translation community will review the translations in their own time when they are uploaded to Launchpad, as we had already discussed.

As Martin says: "we don't actually need the ubuntu-docs SRU, it was just a vehicle to generate the updated XML files."

With the ubuntu-docs upload maverick-proposed we are simply getting the translations imported into Launchpad as planned. The ubuntu-docs package does not need to get to maverick-updates, it can stay in -proposed.

But even if it does go to maverick-updates it does not make a difference, since the translations will only be shipped when the language packs are.

So so far everything goes to plan, except for the fact that the translations uploaded have not been completely imported yet, and they've probably missed the window for being used in the next language pack PPA:

But won't that override customized LP translations with the new (and
worse) strings?

We can even remove it entirely again.

That's fine. We don't use .po files for translated help. ubuntu-docs
builds the translated XML files itself, and we copy them verbatim into
the language packs (though a rather long process).

Thanks for the clarifications, Martin.

The plan was to make the private translations available to the PPA, so that OEM could use them from there.

We discussed it with the Simplified Chinese community and they asked us not to release the private translations to maverick-proposed until they had reviewed them. That's why we didn't want any language packs into maverick-updates.

Kyle tells me that he's spoken to you and that he'll be able to use translations from the current language pack in maverick-proposed, after which it will be removed

Ah, that's true. I thought they had to be exported and the xml files were built by langpack-o-matic. Now I understand that they are simply copied and thus it is not necessary to wait for the export of the PO files.

This however means that if the community wants to modify those translations before they are released in the next language packs, ubuntu-docs will need to be rebuilt with new community-reviewed translations and uploaded to maverick-proposed again. I'm guessing that even if the current ubuntu-docs upload is removed, its xml translations stay parked in soyuz somewhere and they will be the ones used to build subsequent language packs.

Martin, I stumbled upon an unrelated issue this AM while doing some unrelated testing, during which I updated to this proposed package.

Both 10.10.5 (maverick-proposed) and 10.10.4 (maverick-updates) versions of 'ubuntu-docs' result in the About Ubuntu GUI displaying Natty info. I reported it separately at bug 690248 since it's not related to Chinese translations.

Version 10.10.3 displays the proper info. No big deal but I thought I should mention it anyway.
