Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

This happens on a vostro 1000 with ati radeon xpress 200M integrated graphics. I removed proprietary fglrx driver following instruction on Ubuntu community pages. Doing this, made bug #498586 dissappear, but another one appear.

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 10.10 86_64

Package version: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu5

when the system starts, a blinking cursor appears after which the login screen should appear. Instead, vertical color pixel lines appear all over the screen. This also happens while changing user in a running system. A temporary 'workaround' is closing the lid of the laptop and re-opening it. This makes the lines dissappear and login screen shows up. This doesn't work when changing user in a running system, forced shut-down and reboot is neccessary.

Some progression!

I followed the instructions in the section "problem: Need to fully remove -fglrx and reinstall -ati from scratch", in this link:

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem:%20%20Need%20to%20fully%20remove%20-fglrx%20and%20reinstall%20-ati%20from%20scratch

The result is: color lines still appear but are automatically followed by the login screen.

Obviously this bug is related to previous installation of the proprietary fglrx driver. What remains is an ugly boot, but work perfect!

Hey andreas,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)

Thanks for the tip!!

I don't get color lines on start-up anymore, or they disappear so fast I don't notice.

However, when I fire the notebook in recovery mode, the system hangs is the familiar color lines. I can do nothing but force a shut-down.

You can permanently solve the start up problem by using modeset=0 option or it's variants on you grub configuration. Make sure you also do the same for recovery.

Now I have the same problem when waking from "sleep". vertical lines and usually, if am lucky, I can simply close the lid an flip it open to force another "sleep" "wake" cycle and the screen clears.

Unfortunately the lines also appears when the screen switches from full screen applications/screen savers and such. It makes the laptop mostly unusable sometimes.
