Bug Description

tty1login is prompted for a minute at startup (after ubuntu logo and before Xsplash screen)

Sometimes the system first starts to the command line (tty1 login prompted for about a minute). Then the graphical startup continues.
When start-up is complete, I cannot connect to the internet (network device seems broken).

I have to reboot (sometimes 4-5 times) untill no command line login is prompted and then LAN is working fine.

It is not clear what can cause this issue, because it just does or doesn't happen.

I dual boot Windows (Vista) and Ubuntu 9.10 on a DELL vostro 1000 notebook. With Ubuntu 9.04, I didn't have this problem.

Still this issue occurs (updates performed regularly), about two month now. No clues. Cannot find any help in fora or bug reports up to now.

Seems like more people are experiencing this problem. See forum post "[ubuntu] Ububtu 9.10 hangs during boot-up in DELL laptop"

Sorry for the lack of response. Can you test Lucid or Maverick to see if the issue is still present? Thanks!

Hi Mohamed,

Thanks for your response!

I brought the laptop to a linux hardware store. The temporary fixed the issue (I should ask how). The problem is related to the ATI video driver, they said. Since upgrade to Maverick, the issue came up again. This bug thus remains valid.

I found this forum post where somebody describes exactly the same for 32bit ubuntu Karmic:
