Bug Description

Using a Dell c640. Standard ATI driver.

Tried every setting in the gnome-power-saver control panel. Nothing works --whenever I close the lid, Edgy logs me out of the session.

Hal bug? ACPI bug? Something else?

Thanks for your attention.

P.S. Manual suspend using System > Quit > Suspend works fine and will allow me to close the lid without logging out.

I have a Dell c610 that does the exact same thing. gnome-power-control is set correctly. Did not happen in Dapper, but happens in Edgy.

I was thinking Hal or ACPI too. As Edgy has a beta version of Xorg, that may be the reason as well.

Regardless the software interprets the "close lid" incorrectly and logs out of the session, not just locking the screen.

Also, this does not seem to be the same as the Xorg exiting bug, as it seems that those people's screen fails to come back on ( bug 61746 ). This seems as though the close lid event triggers Edgy to logout.

It seems as though it is related to the ATI XOrg driver. When using the ATI driver my screen works well, but when I close the screen it logs out. I have been torubleshooting the problem and when I use the VESA driver it does not log me out, but i do have to hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get to the "locked computer" screen. This is somewhat better for me, as logging out stops programs, and at least this is just a pain.

Also I have noticed that sometimes if I close the lid and open it again it will say that another program has crashed and it will start another one. Then instead of using the Ubuntu login GDM, it uses a Gnome login screen.

Could the Lid Close event be triggering a problem with GDM?

I will try to make this happen again and write down the exact message. I would also be willing to give any information that would help solve this problem (dmesg / xorg.conf / etc).

I can confirm this bug on Dell Latitude C640. XOrg server restarts on lid close. Does happen with XOrg ati driver, does not happen with vesa driver. Did not happen in Dapper, happens in Edgy.

I was able to "fix" this bug by disabling starting of "acpid" daemon after computer start. But this has negative effects, like I don't see status of my battery.

I can also state that this bug occurs on both Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
