I have a Dell c610 that does the exact same thing. gnome-power-control is set correctly. Did not happen in Dapper, but happens in Edgy.
I was thinking Hal or ACPI too. As Edgy has a beta version of Xorg, that may be the reason as well.
Regardless the software interprets the "close lid" incorrectly and logs out of the session, not just locking the screen.
