Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

Ubuntu 10.10
evince reports 2.32.0
I have a LaTeX project with synctex information and AFAIK evince 2.32 supports synctex. But I have no way of defining how to call the LaTEX source editor.

Remedy: I have Okular installed but that means additional 240MB, which sort of makes it a non-solution. I don't want KDE stuff. I'm a GNOME fan and evince promises the same level of reverse-searching for PDF as XDVI has for DVI and Okular for KDE. Just provide an evince package with the synctex support enabled, please

Note also bug 656363 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/656363, it seems that evince 2.32 is supposed to do quite a few things that it doesn't really do in 10.10.

Oh, and an advice: rather than use Okular (which I have in the past), try using texworks instead. It uses the same rendering engine as evince, and lets you easily perform reverse-search.

Yeah, but the texworks editor is sooo poor when compared with my Emacs
macros built in years of use...

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

Yes it is still an issue. Synctex support is here (maybe, couldn't test), but only for calling from gedit. No way to use it with any other latex editor

It's not an issue for me anymore. I have evolved some evince-synctex Python scripts and I'm able to do backward searching from PDF to LaTEX on almost any editor right now.

Get the files from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1716268. There is a shell which launches a python script to open evince through the DBUS. The shell is basically useless if you integrate the editor following the same XEDITOR syntax we all know and love from xdvi. Und das wär's. I've tested with emacsclient, gvim, gedit and my own python clone of GEDIT and it eotks like a charm. You might need to keep track of the click events because they come duplicated and emacs is ot very happy about this.

hm, this is still an issue in evince (except for paaguti's workaround). is there hope to include this functionality in vanilla evince in the future?

that's something to send upstream to bugzilla.gnome.org by someone interested on the issue.
