Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

When doing a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 from torrent downloaded iso to CD, the initial splash screen appears, then after a few minutes, the system hangs and display mild garbage on the screen. This also occurred with xubuntu, mythbuntu (64 & 32 bit)

Mythbuntu 10.04 64 & 32 bit test installs have both worked on this new system.

I expected the 10.10 would install more or less like the 10.04 installation.

WORKAROUND: Intalling 10.04 and upgrading to 10.10.

This looks more like a graphic problem rather than a problem with apt. Can you boot with the safe graphics setting from the installation CD?

I don't see how.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1) Turn on system
2)Open cd tray and insert installation cd, close
3)Observe splash screen for install
4)Observe screen change to mild garbage and system become unresponsive to keyboard or mouse inputs.

Note that for 10.04, step 4) would be to select install 10.04 LTS

Note that the same thing happened for Xubuntu and Mythbuntu mavericks.

I am going to install 10.04 and then upgrade to 10.10 using update manager.

Intalling 10.04 and upgrading online was somewhat tedious but it worked.

Perhaps release testing design and execution should be re-examined.

If interested, you can participate in the ISO testing before a new Ubuntu release is shipped. This helps to catch such errors early in the development process: http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/

I am experiencing the same problem as described above when attempting to install Mythbuntu-10.10 (64-bit). I have the same video card as the original poster, EVGA 512-P3-1240-LR GT240, although my other system components are different from his.

The Alternative CD install also fails.

WORKAROUND⋯

Text based install

InstallationMinimalCD at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

A fast internet connection is a good idea, as well as a good mirror's URL. If you are not DHCP, you'll need a gateway and nameserver IP address. Everything will be downloaded from the internet for the install.

Same situation, same exact video card. Happens with both amd64 and i386 versions. Can you confirm the minimal install method works?

The minimal install works but does not install a desktop. (gnome, XCFE, KDE,&c)

I bit the bullet, installed fresh 10.04 and did a distribution upgrade. To do a distribution upgrade…
⋯(1) Install 10.04 LTS, (which worked with my GT240 in graphical mode)
⋯(2) Use update manager to fully update 10.04 LTS
⋯(3) in "Software Sources", Updates TAB > Change Release upgrade/Show new distribution releases: from "Longterm support releases only" to "Normal Releases" (it's at the bottom of the window)
⋯(4) Now in Upgrade manger, there will be a new option "New Ubuntu release '10.10' is available with a button. Pressing this button will start the distribution upgrade. You may have to press the "Check" button to see it.

For best results, fully update 10.04 before starting the distribution upgrade, and allow a lot of time for each.

This method worked for me but is was time consuming.

Since I was doing mythbuntu with the gnome desktop, I installed 10.04, then used the myth control center to add the Ubuntu Desktop as step (1) and was pleased with the result. Since I was using a Hauggauge 2250, I also installed the drivers under 10.04 ()before the distribution upgrade.

Since this bug involves never reaching the live CD boot menu, the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCasper cannot be done.

You stated in the description that the pc gets to the initial splash screen, are you referring to the screen with a keyboard and human figure inside of a circle or the screen that displays Ubuntu 10.10 above four dots? At any point while loading from the LiveCD, can you switch to a virtual terminal by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1?

You get the language selection screen, then a boot option screen.

The F6 option no longer has text or advanced mode install.

I did not try to open an alternative console.

Hi. I have the same problem. I'm using a EVGA GT240. I get the ubuntu loading screen with the 4 color changing dots, and then the screen gets filled with a chessboard pattern and is no longer responsive to any input. I think you guys should just disable nouveau for the gt240.

Hi all. I have the same problem, but i'm found the temporary solution:
1. Insert LiveCD with Ubuntu 10.10(or Kubuntu)
2. After loading menu of CD press F6 and set "nomodeset" option
3. Click "Install ubuntu"
4. Loading and installing must be successfull
5. After post-install rebooting system in GRUB menu select first string and press "e"
6. After words "quiet splash" write "nomodeset". Result must be "quiet splash nomodeset" (without quotes)
7. Click Ctrl+X
8. The system must loading successfull
9. Install new videodriver(Ubuntu must offer this or install from Nvidia website) and reboot the system
Disadvantage: splash screen with "Ubuntu" and "points" now a low quality:)
Tested on Ubuntu 10.1032 bit , Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit. Hardware: Nvidia GT240 1024Mb DDR5 PCI Express 2.0

Thanks for attention.

Same problem with unusable KMS on Compaq Presario 906US (CPU: Athlon XP-M 2600+, Graphic: ATI Mobility Radeon VE/IGP 320M, SB: ALi 1535+)

Problem:
Booting of Lucy/Maverick/Natty Live-CD works nicely through hi-res splashscreen and/or ESC boot-messages until switch to Desktop is happening --> black screen with operational mouse pointer.

When then switching to a console and back via Ctrl-Alt-F7, the contents of previous console window remains visible, mouse pointer still operational.

Workaround: use of 'nomodeset'

keepitsimpleengr, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
