Bug Description

I'm using ubuntu 10.10 RC and I have a strange problem when switching keyboard layout between English and Persian. When choosing either US or Iranian layouts the characters are alternately English and Persian! I mean one letter is typed in English and another in Persian. If I delete and type again it types correctly.
I'm using xorg version 1:7.5+6ubuntu3 and my friends are reporting similar problems.

It seems that this is a bug with xorg 1.9.0. I've heard that upgrading to the latest version of xorg fixes this problem.

Asking repeatedly to 'fix it' does not help and is considered bad manners.

The description of the problem shows that it is probably a general issue. Therefore, there is something you can do, and this is to find more people who are affected.
You can search the 'xorg/xkeyboard-config/gnome-settings-daemon' packages on launchpad for existing bugs, or look at ubuntuforums.org for other users with the same issue.

For example, see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1570776&highlight=keyboard+layout

I'm not sure if the duplicate status is right. My friends using Arch and Gentoo are also reporting similar problems, so the problem might not be distro-specific. Some people told me this bug has been fixed in Xorg 1.9.2.
Anyway this is a very annoying bug which could prevent many users from using ubuntu 10.10 at all.

Mehdi: The bug you mention at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=835144#p835144
is not related to the issue that you describe here.

It is one thing for the layout to switch on its own (irrespective of which keyboard layouts, whether Iranian or not)
and a completely different thing when the Iranian keyboard layout ('ir') has a bug in it.

It is very important to be precise, otherwise you end up making it worse and you delay the fix from being accepted.

@Mehdi Fattahi: The archlinux bug that you are referring to has to do with a different bug that is specific to the Iranian layout,
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30548
This bug was fixed in xkeyboard-config on 1st Oct 2010 (8 days ago) with
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/commit/?id=e5c77e30a9457a301e0a3857db450310584dae1a
You need to make sure that the fix goes into Ubuntu 10.10.

You all need to get your act together.
After verifying that the layouts do not switch automatically (the part of about testing the new PPA package), you need to
Compare http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/commit/?id=e5c77e30a9457a301e0a3857db450310584dae1a
with /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ir

If they are different, you need to file a new bug report for project 'xkeyboard-config' that asks to update the Iranian ('ir') keyboard layout file from upstream. This is something that you should have done since the 1st Oct.

Good luck!

@Simos You're right my friend. My fault. Let's forget about Arch. The bug does exist in ubuntu.

Affects me too.
I use two layouts: Russian and English (USA).
The constant switching is exactly the same, as described.
It can be temporarily solved by removing and adding the layout again, but returns soon after that, very annoying.
Has anyone tried the new Xorg from ppa's (xorg-edgers or x-updates)?
