Bug Description

Hello,

This seems like it might be a problem with drivers, but on my laptop running Windows 7 I can neither use the horizontal scroll built into the touchpad nor horizontally scroll by holding shift. Vertical scroll by itself works fine. Also, I cannot zoom by holding control, so it seems modifiers+scrolling are not visible to Inkscape. This all functions normally with an external mouse.

Maybe this should be a feature request? Is it possible to have a checkbox in preferences to tell Inkscape to look for "official" horizontal scroll events from devices like mine? For me it would be a work-around, but I think for many it would be a nice bit of functionality.

Cheers!
Jack

On OS X, the issue seems reverse: Shift-scrolling the canvas horizontally with the mouse wheel doesn't work, using the scroll gesture on the touchpad of the MacBookPro however does. The problem is limited to horizontally scrolling the canvas - Shift+scroll with the mouse wheel works in the preferences dialog as well as in the color palette below the canvas (see related bug #167191).

Ctrl+scroll to zoom in/out works with the mouse as well as the touchpad (OS X 10.5.8, MBP).

Maybe there are a few different types of mouse events generated by the same gesture on different hardware? Would it be possible to include several for each piece of event code?

I have problem with touchpad scrolling too. Neither vertical nor horizontal (with shift) scrolling or zooming (with ctrl) works on my HP ProBook 6555b (Synaptics Touchpad V7.4, Windows 7). Only the scrolling icon shows but that's all.
It doesn't work in whole Inkscape app (not only in main canvas, but in select boxes or other elements in dialog windows too).

@Vojtěch Procházka - there is a separate report now about complete failure to scroll with a built-in touchpad:
Bug #718070 “Can't use laptop scroll pad in Inkscape.”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/718070>

Possibly the two issues are related, but this one (bug #624749) seems to be limited to certain events / modifiers only.

I also have this problem on Windows 7, but it seems to be #728019 whereby there was a bug in GTK2 that has been fixed in the latest GTK release.

On latest source (and on 0.91 release), I have no horizontal scrolling on Windows 8.1 either. I do not think it's a driver issue, since I'm using a regular mouse on a desktop. Shift-scroll does nothing, while normal scrolling works as usual in the vertical direction.

As a work around for now, I'm using the space+mouse movement for horizontal motion, but it's less than ideal.

Hi, I have no problems with horizontal scrolling on my laptop with Windows 10 and Inkscape 0.92.3 64-bit.

As we are moving to GitLab, if this is still an issue with the latest Inkscape version, please file a new bug here: https://inkscape.org/report. Thank you!
