I tried all the options provided and found it is related to kernel and i feel this is appropriate to be a bug which is being treated by the developer to report and corrected.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it without more information.
Please run the following command which will attach necessary information:
apport-collect 610285
Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-
If you are using an older release or cannot/don't want use apport please at least add the following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options):
First run the following commands:
1) uname -a > uname-a.log
2) dmesg > dmesg.log
3) sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
4) cat /proc/version_
then attach the files separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or tar/zip-ed).

Flakey is the best way to describe it. If you turn off ALL of the extra features, it works half the time.
I tried to do an apport-collect, but the data was rejected.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We need some more information from you before we can start working on this bug.
Please run the following command which will attach necessary
information:

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python- launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.
If you are using an older release or cannot use apport please at least add the following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options):
First run the following commands:
1) uname -a > uname-a.log
2) dmesg > dmesg.log

Sorry for taking so long.
I am not able to detect a difference when using an older kernel. Some times it works, some times it does not.
Some times the cursor movement is erratic. Some times it is just slow.
Some times a pad-tap works. Often times it does not.
If it works on boot-up, it will keep working. If it doesn't work on boot-up, it will never work (even restarting/
I tried with a couple of versions - the percentage of time that it worked was essentially the same.

What can I do to help fix this defect?
With the latest Kernel, the TouchPad does not work when the laptop is on battery power.

Can you reproduce this bug in Maverick or Natty? What kernel (Ubuntu's or mainline) version did you use?
If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https:/
Thanks in advance.

I am running:
Release 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel Linux 2.6.32-31-generic
GNOME 2.30.2
As this is my work laptop (the one I use to earn a living) it's risky for me to change releases - and that's the reason I have an LTS version loaded.
That said, I can try if I can get a lot of hand-holding. Which kernels are of interest?
It's (the touchpad) is completely dead right now, even when the laptop is plugged into the wall. If I were a guessing person, I might guess that the initialization string gets sent too early, and it never gets resent. Is there a way to force the driver to re-initialize without re-loading?
papukaija (papukaija) wrote : | #31 |
Please test with v2.6.32.32.14-lucid kernel which is the closest upstream kernel for your current Ubuntu kernel. You should also test v2.6.32.35.15-lucid (closest Lucid-targeted Maverick kernel) or v2.6.38.2-natty to see if the bug is likely fixed in Maverick/Natty. I'm not sure sure if you can reinitialise kernel drivers without reloading them but you can at least remove and then add to the kernel with modprobe. Thanks in advance.
