Video chip is a intel 815 with just some little 3D so compiz made some tests before falling in metacity. The compiz tests result in some video garbage and when metacity start video is in some unstable state. I see one time a Xserver crash with SIGSEV ! The only way i found to solve is to uninstall compiz pakage, and now my old machine seem to work.

I suggest to have some where a choice: Did you want to try compiz or start immediately with metacity ?
This choice is set at install, automatically reset if compiz fall back into metacity and of course can be manually change, suppose we add a new good video card !

Oh sorry for link !
A chance i have my USB key...
Capture.png : First boot after installation. OK
Capture-2.png : One boot after, no top and bottom line.
Capture-3.png : If i change theme, bottom line appear, but disappear
next boot.
Capture-6.png : If i change for a large theme a part of top line appear.

Note i see some screen garbage during Gnome start-up, and i notice Gnome
try to use Compiz before falling back into Metacity. This machine is no
more in my home so it is difficult for me to made some more test. I only
unload Compiz package, and now work fine in a association.

My idea:
File .xsession-errors come from a a very poor old machine working fine.
Compiz immediately fall back into Metacity.
My good DELL precision 390 machine work fine using Compiz. And may be
some machines will try Compiz but will fall back into Metacity after
some tests. i.e not immediately ! Sorry i don't have any more
a .xsession-errors of this machine.

We waste time, and Compiz test need not to put video in some unstable
state !
And may be it's a too long work to made all word machines to work
fine...

So if Compiz need one time to fall back into Metacity, we keep this
somewhere in memory and next boot we start directly with Metacity. We
have just to reset this if someone change video component.

Ah, I see what you are talking about, these "lines" are called panels. Normally when people talk about lines on the screen, they are seeing visual artifacts due to poor video rendering.

You can change the user preferences to not use desktop effects (comipz). Go to System->Preferences->Appearance. Under the Visual Effects tab, select None, then Close. Re-add the panels through whatever means you have been doing so that you have the top and bottom panel. Now reboot the system - do the panels remain or are they gone again?

At first note :
1° no desktop effects is the default choice after a fresh install.
2° If compiz fall back into metacity you have no other choise.

So "as natural" this is the test i have done. And it's don't work
because even if you ask "No visual effect" compiz try to do some test at
gnome start up.

As long as if we try an other choice, we test if that is possible, a
solution could be only if we choice "no visual effect" compiz do really
nothing during start-up. As i remind in some old ubuntu versions the
other choice where in "gray" after a fall-back into metacity, that is
not the case now, you can choice and test is then made, and if not
possible we return in "no visual effect".

So test at start-up is no more necessary if we choice " no effect". Test
will be donne if we try an other choice.

So:
If we choice "no visual effect" compiz have not to do any things during
start-up. That is the bug we have to correct.
