Bug Description

Reported by Joe Lynch (https://launchpad.net/people/joe-e-lynch) as a support question (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+ticket/1557).

Alot of people have been having trouble with the HP 7xx series lately because of the issue with /etc/pnm2ppa.conf (One needs to change something about the version line). However I have a HP 712c and have tried all of those changes yet my printer still does not work. The wierd thing is that my printer is recognized and it completes jobs it just won't print. So for instance, if I tell it to print a test page, it sits there processing the job and then it tells me it has completed the job, but nothing comes out of the printer. No errors of anything, I checked /var/log/cups/error_log and no errors (it is set on Debug mode). Any advice that would get my printer working (the only thing that did not work after the switch to Dapper) would be greatly appreciated.

I have created a bug report from you support question to allow attachments.
Can you provide the output of the printingbug info script, it can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript.
To work around bug #52814 you should run the following command:
$ sudo apt-get --reinstall install pnm2ppa
It would be nice if you could attach a complete error_log with LogLevel set to debug.

And this is the cups error_log (I think this is the one that you wanted).

I don't see any problems in the error_log.
This could be a problem with the parallel port, does the command dmesg give any errors related to lp0 after trying to print?

You could try the following basic test:
1) Create a test.pnm image with e.g. the GIMP.
2) Run the following command (as root):
$ sudo -i
# pnm2ppa -v 712 -B 2 -t 10 -b 150 -l 10 -r 10 -x 160 -y 50 -i test.pnm -o - > /dev/lp0

Does this print the image?

Um, well I cant make a pnm image with gimp...only a ppm. So I tried a ppm file, and it didnt work.

Oh and thanks for helping :-)

Sorry I didnt see the dmesg part, the only thing that I get from dmesg | grep lp0 is:
lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
lp0: ECP mode

Well I can close this bug report...I unplugged everything on the printer and then repluged everything and then tryed to add a local printer and it was on the list...I know it wasnt connected wrong because it worked in windows...but...well, it works now. Pascal De Vuyst thanks for your time :-)

Alright, well I recently rebooted and low and behold the printer did not work again...what a suprise. Anyway so I retraced my steps and it seems that I have to:
1.) start /etc/init.d/hplip, otherwise the kde printing wizard doesnt see the printer :-/
2.)Unplug the printer (from the port on the comp.), replug it and then go through the wizard.
In order for my printer to be seen and work...kind of alot but hey...whatever works...just in case somebody else happens to be having the same problem this works.

Does this problem still happen in Feisty?

Yes but I fixed it with the steps I listed at:

According to the steps you describe on the forums this looks like a duplicate of bug #29050.
This bug was fixed in Feisty (cupsys 1.2.7-4ubuntu1), a workaround for Dapper and Edgy is to add ppdev to /etc/modules and then reboot.
Are you using Edgy or Feisty at this moment?
If you use Edgy do you still need to restart hplip with the above workaround?

cupsys (1.2.7-4ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low

  * debian/cupsys.init.d: Fixed parallel port module loading in the
init script, the "ppdev" module got only loaded when the "lp"
module was not loaded yet (closes LP#29050).

Sorry, I am on fiesty so I can't really test the hplip restart. However, I
do know that in fiesty for me it wasn't fixed until I used the same
work-around as before.

It is not clear to me which workaround you mean? Your forum link only describes a workaround for Dapper and Edgy. Please explain the exact steps you have to do to get you printer working in Feisty. Do you need to do this workaround every time?
Did you install Feisty before 6 feb 2007?

Joe,
Does this still happen with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy)?

Not that I can tell, the standard apparmor fix was enough for me.

As far as I can tell no (aside from the fact that you have to turn off apparmor), so we can close this up if no-one else objects.
