Bug Description

I had use many way to install ubuntu 10.04,like install form CD、Install form text mode、update form 9.10 to 10.04

but the problem is always the same:when it turn into ubuntu 10.04's GUI,the mouse and keyboard won't work anymore. No matter using ps/2 or usb .

For example:At first I was using ubuntu 9.10,the mouse and keyboard are work fine. But when I use update manager to update the system to ubuntu 10.04,the mouse and keyboard will no longer working.

And the same problem is happened when I use cd to install, every time when monitor comes to graphic install scenes, the mouse and keyboard won't work anymore.

I have search the article, and I found that the same problem has been report on Bug #577183,but my situation is worser,I can't do anything on system, all my io device just can't work,so there is no way I run any command from a Terminal, like apport-collect -p linux 577183.

Please, now I am wondering if I can use any further new version of ubuntu, pleass help us out.

Hi aa33002,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 577671

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I also have the same problem with an Asus P4S800 mobo when just running off a 10.04 LTS CD, that I burned myself.

My keyboard and mouse nearly always freeze by the time the desktop comes up. On the rare occasions they are not frozen immediately, when I touch the keyboard I get the "stuck Key" effect in that the key I tapped once produces the same character all the way across the input field, and then the system hangs with frozen mouse and keyboard. Of course I cannot look into the logs to see what has happened as I have no control over the system by then.

A bit of background if it will help. I had experimented with an old 8.04 CD from Canonical, and on all my systems it worked fine just running off the CD. So I downloaded the recent 10.04 and burned a CD with high expectations and tried running it off the CD on the same systems.

It works fine on an ancient Compaq P2
It fails on an Asus A7V600-X / Nvidia GeForce giving me a screen full of fine grained coloured specks

It fails on my test machine an Asus P4S800 / Nvidia Geforce with the symptoms described in para 2.
On this test machine I tried the "Troubleshooting ACPI and APIC Problems" set out in Documentation / ReschedulingInterupts with the following results.

acpi=off runs ok but one cpu only
nolapic runs ok but one cpu only
noapic runs ok both cpus
acpi=noirq runs ok both cpus

I then proceeded to install it on my hard disk using the acpi=noirq option in the installer, dual boot with Windows that was already on the machine. The install ran ok, on reboot I get the OS selection screen, but when I choose Ubuntu it boots up and I am back with frozen mouse and keyboard. So presumably I need to add an option to the boot loader as a workaround?

Given my early success with 8.04 I was not expecting this much difficulty. Windows works fine on all these machines.

Let me know if I can help in any way.
Cheers

Snapshot on progress. I can run the installed 10.04 version of Ubuntu stable with 2 CPUs on my Asus P4S800 if I add the noapic parameter at boot time.
Removing quiet splash gives insight into what is going on.
With a stable installed Ubuntu, I can now reboot and read the logs for where it crashed.

More background info: I initially tried adding the acpi=noirq parameter at boot time, as I had managed to get through the install process ok with that.
At first glance it seemed to be working, but I soon found I had no ethernet connection when I attempted to use Update Manager. So I then tried the noapic parameter at boot, and this time Update Manager worked ok as the ethernet connection was fine. Updated and now have 2.6.32-22-generic. Still need noapic at boot to keep system stable.

I've seen various error messages in the logs, but admit to being out of my depth. For instance
"SIS900 can't find IRQ for PIC INT A try using PCI=BIOSREQ" was there when my Ethernet (a SIS900) was not working.

PCI=BIOSREQ was no help on its own, things just froze again.

After "stuck key" events that happened with no boot parameters I saw various entries related to PULSEAUDIO such as
ratelimit.c:3 events suppressed
failed to sink input 114
sink input.c Failed to create sink input too many (something or other) 112x

But after keyboard/mouse freezes I can't see anything odd.

The logs are starting to wrap so I can't go back and read these, so excuse my poor notes. As I have my audio controller dusabled in the BIOS is it strange to see PulseAudio errors?

I also tried the 10.04 cd on yet another AMD based Asus machine, and it ran fine off the CD. I have set my P4S800 up next this and am seeing if comparing them gives me any insight. None so far!

I have trawled a lot of webites and forums on this topic. The P4S800 if listed as OK on a linux compatibility site which is interesting. But I notice that many other mobos do seem to need noapic .

I then put the old 8.04 CD into the P4S800 and ran off the CD, it works just fine still. So what has changed from 8.04 to 10.04 that might be causing this?

Hope all this helps somebody.
Cheers
Anthony

If you needed noapic to install time like me, then you need it again to run.

When the boot choice screen comes up, there is an explanation at the bottom, I think you just have to hit the e key and then you can edit the boot options. Easier just to try it than for me to explain.

Further to my postings above, I find that at the boot choice screen if you choose the second line which is recovery, then you can then choose to run with "failsafe graphics" - an error message comes up, but continue and then the system will run stable, with no need for the noapic option.

So those are two workarounds to this problem. I hope it helps somebody debug it. There is a considerable discussion going on in the Ubuntu forum Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up of other with similar problems.

Would others with this problem say what sort of video cards they are using, where the noapic option seems to prevent the almost instant keyboard/mouse freeze?

Mine is a Nvidia GeForce 256 SDR which is referred to as NV10, and it is far older than the mobo.

I notice my Xorg.0.log contains
EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/nouveau_vieux_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/nouveau_vieux_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so

However it's the lack of stability, not speed, that is putting me off using Ubuntu.
Good luck
