Snapshot on progress. I can run the installed 10.04 version of Ubuntu stable with 2 CPUs on my Asus P4S800 if I add the noapic parameter at boot time.
Removing quiet splash gives insight into what is going on.
With a stable installed Ubuntu, I can now reboot and read the logs for where it crashed.

More background info: I initially tried adding the acpi=noirq parameter at boot time, as I had managed to get through the install process ok with that.
At first glance it seemed to be working, but I soon found I had no ethernet connection when I attempted to use Update Manager. So I then tried the noapic parameter at boot, and this time Update Manager worked ok as the ethernet connection was fine. Updated and now have 2.6.32-22-generic. Still need noapic at boot to keep system stable.

I've seen various error messages in the logs, but admit to being out of my depth. For instance
"SIS900 can't find IRQ for PIC INT A try using PCI=BIOSREQ" was there when my Ethernet (a SIS900) was not working.

PCI=BIOSREQ was no help on its own, things just froze again.

After "stuck key" events that happened with no boot parameters I saw various entries related to PULSEAUDIO such as
ratelimit.c:3 events suppressed
failed to sink input 114
sink input.c Failed to create sink input too many (something or other) 112x

But after keyboard/mouse freezes I can't see anything odd.

The logs are starting to wrap so I can't go back and read these, so excuse my poor notes. As I have my audio controller dusabled in the BIOS is it strange to see PulseAudio errors?

I also tried the 10.04 cd on yet another AMD based Asus machine, and it ran fine off the CD. I have set my P4S800 up next this and am seeing if comparing them gives me any insight. None so far!

I have trawled a lot of webites and forums on this topic. The P4S800 if listed as OK on a linux compatibility site which is interesting. But I notice that many other mobos do seem to need noapic .

I then put the old 8.04 CD into the P4S800 and ran off the CD, it works just fine still. So what has changed from 8.04 to 10.04 that might be causing this?

Hope all this helps somebody.
Cheers
