Bug Description

AR9285 experiences extremely slow transfer rates. I have tried several combinations of access point and encryption combinations with no changes in performance. I have also installed "Linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic" which has been reported by some users to fix this, again it made no change.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Using ndiswrapper appears to be a possible temporary workaround (seeing as how this bug has been open for almost two months now).

I have been looking into doing that the past few days. Not the solution I
was wanting to use but its better than nothing I guess.

Well it looks like ndiswrapper may not be an option for this one.
Ndiswrapper is preforming worse than the ath9k driver included in
"2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:20:59 UTC 2010 x86_64
GNU/Linux". The packet loss is so great that I cant even complete a nslookup
to ping google.com. that of course is after attempting to connect to the
access point several times before actually being able to connect.

Sorry I didn't notice you were using an x86_64 kernel. The ndiswrapper workaround would probably work better for i686 kernels (at least it seems to be outperforming the ath9k module in my case despite lower signal strength).

Have you tried madwifi?

running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, with AR9285, using ath9k wifi driver.

when i test with speedtest.net, i got about 1-4 Mbps
but if i boot into win 7, i got 11-16 Mbps.

not sure where it went wrong, but definitely on ubuntu side. I've installed the compat module, but no difference. =(

still the same situation going on here. I realy wish this bug would
get looked at. The only progress in almost a year on this issue has
just been to install compat module. maybe next year we will get a fix.

The MAD WIFI driver won't work for this. The hardware is not recognized by the driver.

Well it looks like this issue has been resolved in compat wireless 2010-09-12 https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15313 . Now my next question is can we get this merged in the ubuntu compat wireless package? also i tried some newer versions of compat wireless ( last one i tested was 2010-10-11) and they also fixed the issue but i ended up with random kernel panics.

I'm on an ASUS UL20FT with AR9285. I'm experiencing extensive packet loss and frequent disconnects. Also the rate rarely goes above 1Mb. I tried compat-wireless as late as 2011-03-01 on 2.6.35-27-generic. I also tried kernel 2.6.38-020638rc6-generic from ubuntu mainline. I even went ahead and built wireless-testing git trunk as of 2011-03-02.

The rate and packet loss seem to strongly depend on the distance from the AP. All other computers have perfect signal where my laptop fails to connect or the rate drops to 1Mb/s.

It seems that a similar bug is being assigned to Atheros developers on kernel.org:

Fabio Andrade (fburla-deactivatedaccount) wrote :

This problem still persists in Ubuntu 12.04. It is probably related to the Linux kernel because it happens in a lot of other major distros.

I found a partial solution to my problem. I deactivated the B/G/N wireless mode of my router and enabled G mode only. Might work with N mode only, but I can't afford to do that because I have a device that relies on G mode.

The ath9k driver is broken and some people claim that disabling hardware encryption (how safe is that?) and power management of the wireless device will fix the problem.

As I have noticed, these changes might improve those that have an absolute poor performance or a not very fast Internet connection so they won't notice the lack of higher speeds. The problem must happen differently according to router settings so disabling the driver options might seem to be a fix to some.

In my opinion, the driver is broken, probably relying on undocumented reverse engineering, thus they are presenting problems when working with different routers and wireless modes.

Also, this bug has a lot of duplicates, like Bug #535222 which seems to be the first on posted.

<email address hidden>, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
