Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer

While playing sound in any application (music on rhythmbox, or flash video with firefox for example) if an instance of mplayer is open, the other application stops generating sound. mplayer needs to be killed as well as the other application to have sound working again.

what mplayer audio output module are you using?

i'm using the default configuration file. there is only one uncommented line regarding audio output:

/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf:

# Use pulse, then alsa, then SDL video with the aalib subdriver by default.
ao=pulse,alsa,sdl:aalib

That's not a sufficient indication about what specific ao module is
used. please paste your complete command line and complete console output.

that doesn't help at all. please paste the console output that mplayer
prints when you experience the problem. This includes the commandline
that is used when you play the media file.

Out of the blue, do you use gmplayer (the graphical version) or the
commandline version of mplayer?

Thaht is exactly the command and the output. I dont even try to open a file but just run

"mplayer"

From the command line. In the outpult i provided i added

--msg-level all:9

for extra verbosity.

I tried running the gui version (no extra parameters) with the same effect, but no stdout.

if you just start mplayer without any options, it shouldn't load any audio output modules and therefore shouldn't be able to interfere with your audio drivers. are you absolutely sure that this simple invocation breaks audio on your system?

We need the mplayer output with the exact mplayer invocation that causes the described symptom!

i am absolutely sure that the commands i provided are the ones executed, with no file to open or any other additional parameters than the ones already mentioned.

It could be that in the default installation there is a script called mplayer that gets executed when i run "mplayer" and provides extra parameters to the real executable, which i dont think is the case. Will check, though, and let you know.

here is a video of the execution of /usr/bin/mplayer, which is the binary itself, not a like or anything like that

/usr/bin$ ls -ltra mp*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18680 2009-09-10 05:18 mpeg2desc
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 54800 2010-02-02 10:33 mpc
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4476552 2010-04-02 15:58 mplayer

I'm sorry for the low quality, but it should be enough to see the effect of the execution of the command. It is not noticeable but the player's progressbar (rhythmbox in this case) continues moving but sound stops.

I've noticed that with other applications, when executing certain audios with sound the same error occurs (i.e. notification sounds in skype). May this be a problem with pulseaudio, then?

Please advice so that this bug can be reassigned

Plafuro (plafuro) wrote :

forget about my last comment, notification sounds are launched by skype through mplayer (again, same effect, no sound when mplayer is executed). Skype and any other audio software needs to be restarted in order to have audio working again

Please advice for further steps.
