Bug Description

Hi, I'm using Kubuntu 9.10, tried Kubuntu 10.04, same problem there. Also tried opensuse 11.2, also same problem there.
Problem: When I start using my webcam, my wifi disconnects and is unable to restart. On the other hand, my webcam only works with wifi disabled.
Those are the components concerned:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501USB Wireless Adapter
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04f2:b022 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd Gateway USB 2.0 Webcam

Workaround: Disabled uvcvideo by blacklisting it. When I want to use my webcam, I need a Cable-LAN connection and starting it manually with sudo modprobe uvcvideo

First I thought, this bug is related to bug #435352, but as this seems to be solved with an kernel-update, and mine isn't, it seems to be a new one. In var/log/debug and messages there is no suspicious entry about that. This bug affects all applications that use my webcam (Kopete, Skype, luvcview, etc.)

Here's the difference when using luvcview:

I would like to add the following information: after I hit the bug (i.e., I try to use the webcam while connected with the wifi dongle) I could not find any other solution than rebooting for returning to a stable state. Removing/inserting kernel modules does not solve the problem; removing/inserting USB cables for webcam and/or wifi adapter does not solve the problem (moreover, "lsusb" reports the wifi adapter even after it is disconneted). I believe this is a bug of the rt73usb driver.

One more information:
I was using Opensuse 10.3, 11.0 and 11.1 with this computer, and I had never problems with the webcam and wifi using at the same time. The problems started with Kubuntu 9.10 and Opensuse 11.2.

Same annoying problem. I noticed the conflict between webcam and wifi starting in Ubuntu 9.04 and all later releases (works in 8.10). It does seem likely to be a bug in the rt73usb driver. Given that webcam and wifi were working in 8.10 I wonder if there was a regression in the driver somewhere along the way.

How did you find out, it is a problem of the rt73usb driver?
For me it seems that it is a problem of the uvcvideo driver, as it's not just the Wifi not working. Also my computer doesn't recognize any USB-Stick that is plugged in. So when I activate the uvcvideo driver and start using my webcam, all USB-parts of my computer are gone....

By the way, I posted this bug one month ago and since then there was no change in Status, Importance and still it isn't assigned to anyone.... Could someone tell me please how to go on?

Hello,
I am using 10.04 with Gnome and I wanted to see my face with the Chicony Electronics webcam integrated in my laptop. I then installed Camera Monitor from Ubuntu softstore and it first goes well ... I saw my face ... once :o(

Since then at boot up there is a error box that says : "Another instance of Camera Monitor is already running!". And I also add some Wireless disconnection when I don't remove Camera Monitor install.

Hope that helps.

I'm using also 10.04 and have the same problem as expos and daniele3 with the Logitech Webcam C500 and a Ralink RT2501USB Wireless Adapter. I also tried a D-Link Wireless Adapter (which is identified as rt73) - but without success.

I think this bug is kernel-related, as uvcvideo and rt73usb are part of the actual kernel and I had the same problem not only with (k)ubuntu, also with opensuse.
Now, after 5 months that I posted the bug, nothing has happened. This is my first bug report, so is there something missing that the ubuntu-developers or the kernel-team takes note of it?

Recently I tried a Logitech Quickcam E2500 on my computer and it worked (after I switched of the "auto exposure", but that's a different story/bug). So this bug is quite sensitive concerning the web cam.

Next I tried the Logitech Webcam C500 again. I had a look at the syslog when I plugged it in. After the kernel reports the registration of two new usb devices (uvcvideo and snd-usb-audio), the NetworkManager reports the deactivation of the wifi device and tries to reestablish an internet connection (without success). Finally, the syslog becomes flooded with messages from the kernel. There are only two different messages:

phy6 -> rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x07 failed for offset 0x3040 with error -108.

phy6 -> rt2x00usb_regbusy_read: Error - Indirect register access failed: offset=0x0000308c, value=0xffff8800

The Vendor Request has sometimes the value 0x06 and the offset changes between several values, I saw 0x30c0, 0x30c4,
0x3040, 0x308c and 0x3090. The first message comes about five times in a row and then comes the second. This seems to repeat endlessly, even after unplugging the web cam!

Is there any other information I can retrieve to solve this bug?

With best regards

mrhonne

PS: here is a part of the syslog after plugging in the web cam:

Fyi: i tried other USB ports as well, but Bus 1 is the one I can reach easily, it didn't make a difference.

But when I plugin a Terratec webcam, the system goes berzerk and a hard reset is the only option. When at the same time looking at the messages-log we'll see this, repeating until you restart (unplugging the camera device doesn't work):

As suggested in #488909 and #528160 by Jeremy Foshee, I installed the latest upstream kernel (2.6.36). But this didn't result in a different behaviour.

I also tried the "irqpoll" boot option (this was suggested on some other web page I found during this search), also without success.

I will also use apport to gather debug information.

expos, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

Christopher, nice to see that things are going on.

I installed the newest Kubuntu (12.10) (I didn't find a newer development version in this moment). The bug still exists.

The information above are collected with apport as you described.

I'll now switch on wifi and the webcam (provoke the bug) and do a second run with apport after my wifi and webcam crashed.

I tried it with the most recent mainline-kernel (v3.7rc2), but my webcam didn't respond at all. I was not able to find the uvcvideo driver and not able to load it with modprobe uvcvideo.
So I tried the last mainline-kernel before the rc-versions (v3.6.2), and with this version my webcam, wifi and usb-ports work together (for the first time for more than two years now) :-) I tried kamoso and luvcview more than thirty times, with wifi switched on and off and with or without reading data from an usb-stick, I rebooted twice with this kernel-version 3.6.2 and everything continued working as it should.
Thanks for your help!

expos, as per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git the last known bad Ubuntu kernel 3.5.0-17.28 is based on mainline 3.5.5. The last known good mainline kernel is v3.6.2-quantal.

So, the next step is to perform a reverse mainline kernel bisect from 3.5.5 to v3.6.2-quantal, in order to identify the last bad upstream kernel version, followed consecutively by the first good one. As per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ we have:
v3.5.5-quantal/
v3.5.6-quantal-ok/
v3.5.6-quantal/
v3.5.7-quantal/
v3.6-quantal/
v3.6-rc1-quantal/
v3.6-rc2-quantal/
v3.6-rc3-quantal/
v3.6-rc4-quantal/
v3.6-rc5-quantal/
v3.6-rc6-quantal/
v3.6-rc7-quantal/
v3.6.1-quantal/
v3.6.2-quantal/

Hence, could you please test v3.6-rc2-quantal/ ?

For more on bisecting, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection .

Christopher, I installed several mainline kernels to determine the last one with bug and the first one without bug:

The last one, where the bug appears, is v3.5.7

The first one without the bug is v3.6

I tried v3.6-rc2 as you asked me, but there is the same problem as with v 3.7-rc2 earlier, my webcam is not recognized at all, so there is no testing possible. With the rc-versions there is no uvcvideo-driver loaded, and I'm unable to load it with modprobe uvcvideo either.

expos, thank you for reverse bisecting the mainline kernel. The next step would be to reverse commit bisect the mainline kernel in order to identify the first commit that fixes your problem. Christopher, I tried as explained on the Kernel-Bisection website, but without success. I understand what you asked me to do, but I don't have the knowledge to solve the problems that I encountered:

Cloning the kteam-tools repository with git clone zinc.canonical.com:/srv/kernel.ubuntu.com/git/jsalisbury/kteam-tools kteam-tools
ended with
Permission denied (publickey).
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
So I did git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/kteam-tools.git kteam-tools, which worked appearently.

Next problem at adding the remote repository:
git remote add precise git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-precise.git
as I'm using Quantal, I tried to replace precise with quantal, but that didn't work later on when trying to do the mainline-build-one script, so I did it again with precise in the command

I continued, and with git bisect good v3.6 and git bisect bad v3.5.7 I had this as outcome:
Bisecting: a merge base must be tested
[28a33cbc24e4256c143dce96c7d93bf423229f92] Linux 3.5

Then I started to build the upstream test kernel, that run through. During execution there where several error messages and kernel version 3.2.0 appeared several times... And the worst, after the script run through I found nowhere the deb-file to install the new kernel version.

For the moment I'm stuck
