it stops at this point I have tried pressing ctrl+Alt+F1 and it give me the following text:

GRUB loading.
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda1: clean,162679/3530752 files, 1022542/14113094 blocks

Skipping profile in etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox-3.5
                                                                                                                         [ OK ]
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. sevice
S49console-setup start

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you
may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start S49console-setup start: Unknown job: S49console-setup

I also have this problem. I can switch to console 1, log in, and run startx, this gets me a desktop.

I have disabled acpi-support from the runlevel configuration which is the step that is printing "Checking battery state..."
and the same behavior exists on bootup, so it seems this step is not the cause, and since the OK is printed on this step, it seems to indicate this step completes.

Nothing I have tried seems to resolve this problem. I'm currently working around the problem, by running startx from a command line. But if I switch to tty7, it is still sitting on the boot screen with the last step printed of "Checking battery state..."

I'm running a Thinkpad T61, upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10.

It's the darnedest thing, I've installed 10.04 a least 4 times via CD and 2 times via update manager
and have had these problems, but now all of a sudden I used the CD
at boot up:
pressing space, then selecting language, then pressing F6 twice to command line typing
"i915.modset=0 xforcevesa"
then enter
(because it's the only way around the blank screen saga!!)
then the desktop comes up as normal then I installed as usuall
then it restarts and BAMM!!!
all of a sudden it's working properly!?

Didn't try anything different or anything!!

You guess is as good as mine. Wish I could say what it was .........:(

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have the correct package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have re-classified this bug as a bug in linux.

Please run "apport-collect 572473" (without the quotes) from a terminal window to upload the necessary logs to help debug this issue.

Please also provide the exact model of the onboard intel graphics card in this laptop. You can find this information by running the command "lspci | grep VGA" (without the quotes) in a terminal window. If this laptop has an "Intel Corporation 82852/855GM", this bug report is most likely a duplicate of bug #566379.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thanks in advance!

After upgrading to Lynx 10.04 I cannot login normally :(
I can however login in recovery mode and open GUI using startx.
In single user mode, my sound controls seem to be messed up as I do not have any volume control. Also I can play flash video but not video residing on my machine (and skype detects my webcam but shows a black screen)
Normal bootup is stuck after "Checking battery state... [OK]"
If I open another terminal during normal bootup and do startx, the GUI comes up but messed up in horrible ways - with no mouse, no window buttons etc.
sudo gdm doesn't work from terminal as well, exits with an assertion failed error.

Here's the lspci output:

lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9600M GT] (rev a1)

My computer have fresh installation of 10.04 LTS with built-in nVidia motherboard.
Then i install nVidia card driver and everything work fine until there is new kernel update. I update to new kernel and reboot. There is no problem but the next morning, it cannot login normally. I have to start Gnome using startx after login on tty1 console.

After some googling with try and error, i found 2 solutions.
Solution 1 (ugly): Remove the nVidia driver and reboot (don't install nVidia driver again).
Solution 2 (longer): use the guide line in
 http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Fix-the-Big-and-Ugly-Plymouth-Logo-in-Ubuntu-10-04-140810.shtml

It work for me. I think the problem is for Plymouth in Ubuntu to detect graphic driver and use correct commands.
