I also have this problem. I can switch to console 1, log in, and run startx, this gets me a desktop.
I have disabled acpi-support from the runlevel configuration which is the step that is printing "Checking battery state..."
and the same behavior exists on bootup, so it seems this step is not the cause, and since the OK is printed on this step, it seems to indicate this step completes.
Nothing I have tried seems to resolve this problem. I'm currently working around the problem, by running startx from a command line. But if I switch to tty7, it is still sitting on the boot screen with the last step printed of "Checking battery state..."
I'm running a Thinkpad T61, upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10.
