Bug Description

MeerKat Ion WebTop
Running Standard Ubuntu 64 bit with 4 GByte RAM
This message seen in Kernel, log: (yes - the computer's name is "morticia")

Apr 18 08:40:34 morticia kernel: [ 12.679314] ACPI: I/O resource nForce2_smbus [0x4e00-0x4e3f] conflicts with ACPI region SM00 [0x4e00-0x4e3f]
Apr 18 08:40:34 morticia kernel: [ 12.679326] ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver
Apr 18 08:40:34 morticia kernel: [ 12.679336] nForce2_smbus 0000:00:03.2: Error probing SMB2.

This has been observed on other Ubuntu based systems and can be found here:
Apr 18 08:40:34 morticia kernel: [ 12.679314] ACPI: I/O resource nForce2_smbus [0x4e00-0x4e3f] conflicts with ACPI region SM00 [0x4e00-0x4e3f]

Apr 18 08:40:34 morticia kernel: [ 12.679336] nForce2_smbus 0000:00:03.2: Error probing SMB2.

I am not at all sure the above is causing the hang but since it is the only error I see in any of the logs I am suspicious. I have completely reinstalled the Ubuntu 9.10 distribution and the problem persists. This error is not unique to the System76 computer:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/440470

The above link is talking about SMB1 - my error (and a few others with related bug numbers) also experience the error when probing SMB2. A couple of users experiencing this note that it is often (not always) associated with downloading a sizable file using wireless or when playing music. I have seen it occur in both of these circumstances,

It is kind of a bummer - the lockup term is descriptive since the computer is completely unresponsive from keyboard and mouse and requires a power reset and, depending on prior activity, fixing file system with fsck. In the case of playing (locally stored) music, the sound was in an infinite loop of playing a couple of the same notes over and over until power was reset.

Tom,

It is except it is hanging my computer and I only saw one reference to this
in another post. Is the MeerKat Ion NetTop an Asus under the covers? Reading
the existing bug discusssion was saying that the error below was just going
to be reduced in priority so that no one saw it on boot. In other words it
did not say that the root cause would be addresses; only the symptoms hidden
- at least this is my read.

If I can know what hardware I have I can monitor outside this bug report to
see if others see this with other Linux distributions and whether they have
come up with any work arounds. I am not absolutely sure this is causing the
system to hang but until I find out otherwise, combined with this being the
only error showing, I am suspicious.

Your thoughts?
