Bug Description

Hello! When I try to boot from the Lucid Beta 2 (and earlier) CD, I see the new Ubuntu logo and then the screen says me "No signal", so I can't install it :(
P.S. I've also got a laptop, and everything is allright on it, but on my desktop PC I can't install Lucid because of this bug.

IMHO, this isn't. That guy has a problem with installed Lucid, and I have a problem with the installer.

@kajo, I can't choose "Try Ubuntu without installing" or "Install Ubuntu". Screen turns off before this menu appears.

Hi Ignat,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 559888

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I get this on a Dell Dimension D500 laptop with an RC disk.

If I press enter at the right point in the boot sequence, somewhere after the BIOS screen, but before the Ubuntu flash screen, I get a menu. If I select try or install, it goes to the splash screen and eventually the screen just goes blank and the laptop becomes completely unresponsive. Selecting the "check CD" option says that the CD has no errors.

Lucid Lynx is completely unusable AFAICS.

I downloaded the released 10.04 today and I am having an identical problem to Ignat's description. When I boot the live cd, I see the new Ubuntu logo with the purple background. Then, before it gets to the next part, the monitor goes black and says "Input not Supported". I am using a Saphire HD5770 gpu. I have installed 10.04 successfully on my laptop, so I know that it isn't the dvd that I burned it on.

I had this problem with the RC last week, and the problem remains with the release from yesterday. I tried to install on another partition of a machine with an existing installation of 8.10, but can't get any further than the install menu. I've tried all the available options in the F6 menu but get the same symptoms each time. My machine has an Nvidia 9500GT graphics card.

I can confirm on a Dell D500 (must be a Intel graphic card), blank screen, nothing is working (CTRL ALT F1 doesn't bring a terminal)

Again, same thing on a Compaq 6710b - install results in a blank screen. Entering vga=791 as a boot option does not work like it did in former releases. Entering garbage (vga=123) presents a list of the available video modes - none work for me.

Some more tests:
-installed Lucid using Clonezilla (a simple copy from a virtualized Lucid): blank screen
-booted in recovery mode, then started failsafe graphic mode: fail too, VESA no valid mode, no screens found...

So it's not just an installation problem, even with an installed system, it's unusable.

I think this bug is critical, it makes Lucid totally unusable (unless the alternate CD is working? But as my installed system doesn't display anything, I don't think it would solve anything if you cannot use a system you just installed) on this series of Dell laptop.

This worked:

boot in recovery mode (after installing using Clonezilla... See the link to apply it on a LiveCD or AlternateCD)

"echo options i915 modeset=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u"
