Bug Description

I've tried livecd and installs of kubuntu 9.04 up to kubuntu 10.04 and sound has never worked on this laptop. Currently have kubuntu 10.04 installed.

I tried tweaking things according to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=616845 but could not get any sound from speakers or headphone jack.

I've installed the package from the ppa, but still no sound.

Is there any more info I can provide?

I've managed to get some sound from headphones plugged into the mic socket.

I added the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

options snd-hda-intel model=test
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

After setting model as "test" and rebooting, the mixer showed many new
controls, although most seem to have no effect.

Is using enable_msi=1 sufficient? Please don't split module options across lines; instead place them all on one line. For this particular test, please use only:

options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

When I refer to "sufficient," I mean:

1) inserting headphones into jack mutes internal speakers;
2) removing headphones from jack unmutes internal speakers;
3) capture works using GNOME sound recorder.

Also, if using enable_msi=1 is sufficient, please provide output from using http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh afresh.

No, enable_msi=1 is not sufficient.

When you say "don't split module options across lines" do you mean it should be multiple options on one line like this:

options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 model=test

I tried "options snd-hda-intel model=test" but without "enable_msi=1" and got the same result as before. That is, sound only with headphones, but plugged into the mic jack. No sound from speakers or headphone jack.

I ran the alsa-info.sh script again, with this setting:

options snd-hda-intel model=test

Ah, this looks like the issue that was resolved today, though you'll need to use tomorrow's snapshot (linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)) to verify. It should be available in ~18 hours.

Still no sound. In fact, with latest upgrades installed, I get no sound at
all, even with
"options snd-hda-intel model=test" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. (With
this option, I was previously able to get sound from the with headphones
plugged into the mic jack.)

Sorry, that was wrong. I *can* still get sound with
"options snd-hda-intel model=test" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf through
the mic jack.

Could you please also test model=auto, model=hp, model=hp-3013, and model=hp-dc7600 separately? Please make sure to test both playback and capture.

I've tried all of these:
model=hp
model=hp-3013
model=hp-dc7600
model=fujitsu
model=acer
model=will
model=replacer
model=favorit100
model=basic
model=auto
model=test

The only one that produces any sound is model=test. The three hp ones,
favorit100, basic, and auto seem to run "pasuspender -- speaker-test
-Dplughw:SB -c2 -twav" but the others stall at the first "0 - Front Left"
displayed in console and don't get any further.

As far as capture is concerned, I don't have a microphone handy, but I'll
see if I can find one for testing.

The others run the speaker-test command normally, but as I have already
said, they don't result in any sound (other than the "test" option, which
produces output from the mic jack).

Hi, It seems I have almost the same configuration of Mefisto. I can get sound from headphones by using alsa 1.0.23 and model=will, still no sound from speaker.
I've posted a question about it here

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/120558

and their answer was that my card is experiencing the same bug you're trying to solve here.
On the link above you can find my exact configuration. If you need more information (or if I should report a different bug) just let me know. Thanks

Still no luck on Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10.
model=test doesn't work on my B1904TU but model=will does on Ear port, sound quality is not very good if only model=will.

After using below, sound quality is good (haven't try which one makes). Try to check alsa-source if possible.
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias snd-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=will
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

Hi,

Can someone from the ALSA development team please take a look at the output from the following thread?

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/186698

It contains boatloads of debugging information concerning the ALC260 codec on another Presario B1900 computer, including a codecgraph .svg file.

Joey is still trying to get the speakers to work.

Regards,

Mark
