Bug Description
Binary package hint: pidgin
When a new message arrives, Pidgin displays an icon in the notification area; after opening that message, the icon disappears, but a small space in the area is left blank, so the notification area "grows" to the left (in default setup). This can be seen thanks to bug #532403 - the notification area is not transparent, but the space to the left is. (However, in a netbook setup, with window switcher applet and limited screen space, the bug is not purely cosmetics - empty notification area eats up space quickly.)
How to reproduce:
1. Open Pidgin, set "Show notification icon" in options to "On unread messages".
2. Place any applet (e.g. spacer) exactly to the side of the notification area, note the placement.
3. Have some messages sent to you. After each message, switch to another program window.
4. Observe the notification area and spacer position.
Expected results:
After the message icon disappears, the notification area has exactly the same size as before, so the spacer position doesn't change.
Actual results:
After each message, the notification area gets some blank space, and the spacer moves away with it. (See the screenshot.)
