Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

While installing the 10.4 Beta-1 desktop AMD64 the install hangs at the splash screen. I've been unable to recover the logs because I can't get a prompt. I've tried switching terminals, and tried a CTRL+ALT+DELETE. There is no response. The only way I've been able to recover any information is by hitting the power button. The ACPI interupt is caught and I get an ejected CD, with some terminal output. The last line of the terminal output is a prompt asking me to remove the CD and hit enter.

The last line above the CD eject prompt is:
modem-manager: Caught Signal 15,

No matter how long I wait for the installer the last line is always modem-manager.

I'm sorry for this not terribly useful bug report. I've read, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs, and I'm still unable to figure out how, in this case, to get a prompt to get at the logs. Any help with getting those logs would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem - both on CD and USB flash.

When you see the "keyboard equals accessibility" icon on the very first screen, press a key to bring up the boot options menu. Select a language then press F6, and escape to clear the menu that appears. You should see a line of text. Remove the "quiet splash" text from it and put "nomodeset" (without quotes) in its place. Hit enter.

This will give you much more verbose output of what's happening during the boot process. If the install still hangs, can you please take a picture of your screen at the point where it's stopping and attach it to this bug. If you are able to get to the screen with the "Try Ubuntu 10.04" and "Install Ubuntu 10.04" options, do let me know.

Thanks!

The log is attached. This is an amd64 beta1 desktop versiom started from USB flash (md5 sums checked). I just think the log is not verbose enough to get anything out of it.

I also tried alternate install but I had problems with partitioning my RAID1 (will have to write down the errors and report it later). 9.10 went through this smoothly.

Moving this to linux for lack of a better package. This is not a bug in the graphical installer.

Hi igable,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 544815

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I think I have the same problem.

I got my brand new Mac Mini (newest generation) this week and of course I have to install some kind of Linux on it :-)

First I tried Debian 5.05 AMD64 which could not detect my cdrom driver.
Then I tried Ubuntu 9.10 which didn't boot at all.

I then updated my Ubuntu Desktop CD to "ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso" which didn't boot showing the above mentioned behavior. Unfortunately I was not able to access a shell to dump some logs.

I am now with the newest iso image I found "maverick-desktop-amd64.iso" and it still does not boot. After some seconds however I do get a busybox.

The console output says "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system"

From the log it seems like there is trouble with my SATA harddrive.

Please feel free to contact me If you need mor information. I'll try to get some more logs online.

For my case the problem disappeared when I used the image from
http://macbookpro7-1.daviey.com/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64-macbook71.iso
This one seems to have a special kernel witch supports my SATA controller (some new model from NVIDIA I think).

Later I found a page dedicated to my Mac Mini Generation 4 which is
