using a laptop IBM Thinkpad R60.

Firefox can crash/lock the whole system when browsing a map in Google Maps.

Firefox can crash/lock the whole system when browsing Flash content.

Is it possible to prevent individual processes from crashing the whole system?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug without some more information. Could you please run 'apport-collect 530032' in a Terminal? This will automatically add information about your system to this report so we can more easily determine the cause of this bug. While there is apport information attached to this report, it is information that apport collected before this was designated as being related to Firefox. By running apport again, we will get more information pertaining to Firefox specifically.

Sorry about that, I forgot to let you know that you would have to give Apport proper permission. If you go to "~/.cache/apport/" and delete the "launchpad.credentials" file, then you should be asked to set a permission when you run Apport again. The .cache folder is hidden in your home folder, so you'll have to show hidden folders (either by using Ctrl+H or going to View -> Show Hidden Files). If you have any trouble, then do not hesitate to let me know so I can help. Once you delete that file, then please run Apport and give it at least permission to "Change Non-Private" data. Thanks in advance!

OK, sorry about that, I do not seem to have /apport directory. "locate launchpad.credential" returns nothing.

OK, I think this is a Window manager issue although you mention that Chrome works fine, I have had the system lock up with Chrome as well (the mouse still moves though, in small jumps). The same thing has happened when using pop-up menus in Eclipse and Image Viewer.

Thanks for the reply. Are there any specific actions that can consistently cause the bug to occur? If you can provide us with specific steps that cause this issue, then we can attempt to reproduce on our machines, which will help us narrow down causes.

Well, i know i said that the problem could be Firefox but yesterday the system crash running Chrome & yes i feel very frustrated about this bug, because i really like Ubuntu i thought ceasing to use Firefox the problem was going to be out but that's not the case i forget to mention i'm using "Ubuntu 10.4 RC Gnome x86_64" i'm not advanced with this i'm gonna try the x86 architecture and see If the problem persists. If in something help i gonna leave my hardware information Thanks...

The freeze doesn't happen with the same set of steps always, but Google Map always freezes the system when one zoomes and drags the map a few times (now that I tried this ones more, I only had to load the page in order for this to happen).

Also, using pop-up menus in Eclipse (closing a projekt) and Image Viewer (so probably with any app, leading me to think that this is probably Window manager issue) may cause the same problem. This I cannot reproduce, but the end-state is exactly the same as when freezing because of Google Maps, i.e. frozen system and mouse pointer moving slowly in small jumps.

Since this seems to happen with other applications for both of you, can you please let us know what graphics cards you are using? If you do not know off-hand, then running 'lspci | grep VGA' in a terminal will tell you what brand you have. It sounds like this could be a problem related to the graphics card/driver.

Since this happens with other programs besides Firefox, I'm removing Firefox from this report and marking that it needs to be reassigned.

This issue affects my computer, too. It is an Acer Travelmate 5730 series, lspci output attached.
I am having a bunch of troubles since updating to 10.04, unfortunately: Virtualbox kernel modules do not load occasionally, sound does not load occasionally and if that happens the shutdown panel applet only logs me out (I can shutdown via terminal then, though). I don't want to span this bug with unrelated things but as I don't know what might be important I try to give descriptive hints of everything non-normal on my system install.
More specifically, Ubuntu freezes when I use Firefox to read www.sportschau.de (the sports section of a German news site, with audio and video content), that is fairly reproducible, it might take a few attempts but finally it will happen. I installed chromium and no problems there. Freeze means the whole desktop session is unresponsive, keyboard as well (caps lock indicator light not working). However, the mouse is working, and programs are still running, e.g. banshee music player or skype voip calls. Processor fan starts running high, so the processor seems to be busy with something.
lspci output attached, if you point me to anything, I will happily provide more technical output.
Cheers, Rene

Same problem with me - visiting sportschau.de freezes the x-server after some time. It always happens when scrolling or when changing to the tab containing this site. Restarting the x-server with alt+print+k works.

I am using the Ubuntu netbook window manager.
It happens mostly when using Firefox - The website sportschau.de leads to a freeze with high probability.

The problem seems to be solved for me - I dont have any freezes in 2 days.

I upgraded Firefox to 3.6.6 and the kernel to 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu but this did not help.
Then I upgraded the xserver and related packages by adding
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
to the sources and to an apt-get update/upgrade.
Since then, I do not have this bug any more.

Clemens

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
