Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

1) lsb_release -rd
 Description: Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
 Release: 11.10

2) apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer
libreoffice-writer:
  Installed: 1:3.4.2-2ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1:3.4.2-2ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.4.2-2ubuntu3 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Writer via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/525717/+attachment/2369876/+files/example.odt && lowriter -nologo example.odt

when one uses the mouse and selects the blue text → clicks Format Paintbrush → selects “jumps over” in the green text, only those two words have their format changed.

4) What happens instead is “jumps over” changed to the desired formatting but the font, font color, and size of the words to the left and right, as well as the paragraph justification changed to Default Formatting.

WORKAROUND: Use the mouse and select the blue text → click Format Paintbrush → press and hold the Ctrl key -> select “jumps over” in the green text then let go.

Original Report Comments: Note to OpenOffice.org: this happens in the Windows version of OpenOffice too.

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you test if it still occurs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 525717

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference bug 525717 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug openoffice.org

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released' or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

This still occurs in OpenOffice version 3.2.0 under Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx).

Try it yourself, following the steps in the first post above.

turbolad, could you please provide a detailed, click-by-click example of what you do to reproduce this problem? Does this occur for you in LibreOffice? If using Lucid or Maverick feel free to perform at the Terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -y install libreoffice-writer

This does occur in LibreOffice too.

The problem is the "Format Paintbrush" affects the whole paragraph instead of just the part you want to change. It always happens when the font is changed from the default "Times New Roman" to something else e.g. Arial.

Example: you have some text that's red, highlighted, a different size and bold and you want to apply this elsewhere. You select that formatted text and then use the "Format Paintbrush" to apply it somewhere else in the document. When you do that, the whole paragraph changes instead of just the part you changed with the Format Paintbrush. What changes is the font in the paragraph - it changes to "Times New Roman" instead of being left alone.

turbolad, this issue is unreproducible in LibreOffice Writer. Could you please attach a document that demonstrates this problem with step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce?

turbolad, as per upstream rationale it is agreed this is not a bug:

As per: http://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Copying_Attributes_With_the_Format_Paintbrush when "Text is selected" it is noted that it "Copies the formatting of the last selected character and of the paragraph that contains the character." While the default action is not intuitive, the WORKAROUND does give one the opportunity to achieve the expected results.

Feel free to report and future bugs you may find.

I hope as a result of this, the Format Paintbrush behaviour will be changed. It is very confusing for users who have previously used Microsoft Office and discover that the formatting is being applied to a whole paragraph instead of selected characters; this is VERY frustrating. It's easy to see why people like myself considered this to be a bug.

[This is an automated message.]
There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.
