This problem was reproduced here on two different Ubuntu installations.

The machine I'm writing from is the one from which I generated the report,
and the other machine that replicates the problem is a fresh install from the Ubuntu 9.10 CD
and a complete session of the update manager as of February 6th, 2010

lsusb seems to recognize the drive caddy. While I'm not totally used to looking
at the output of dmesg, it seems in comparying the outputs shown in various how-to's
that a device name is never generated, so therefore nothing to feed to the
mount command.

In googling , I saw some reference to a faulty enquiry command as relates to this particular
device and something about needing an entry in unique devices. Not feeling comfortable
with the concept of patching my kernel , I figured I would report the bug here and hope that it can be resolved.

I also saw some reference that this might be a regression issue and that the device had worked in
previous kernel versions , however I would not know this from my personal experience.

Just trying to toss in whatever I can information wise.

Good luck, and let me know.

Thanks

Hi Dr.,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 518608

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Howdy , and thanks for dropping me a line.

The Drive caddy issue is still of concern to us. We are a pretty low
overhead show here, living in a converted school bus, and so we tend to
run our equipment until it dies.

We have two machines running here , with one being less than a year old
and the other being about a decade old, and both experience the same
issue.

NOTE: Before the older machine was switched over to Linux , it used to
run Windows XP, which did support the drive caddy.

I have issued the apport-collect -p linux 518608 command on the newer
machine and the older one should be issuing the command shortly.
Both machines are running Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest updates.

I just got an error from the command when running against the newer
machine, but I don't think it was on my end as the error was an
http server 500 error connecting to launchpad. I'll run it once again
just in case, but I did get a bunch of bacon mails, so this second run
might be mostly redundant.

The older machine stopped at the beginning of the interrogation and did
not complete the command, however the machine did not hang.

Alas , we don't have a machine to run out of stream updates on, as the
machine we would use for such adventures is deadlined right now and
the running machines are mission critical to us making a living..

Anyways , thanks all for looking into this issue, as we have many years
of data hanging out in those drives that it would be nice to have access
to again.
