Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

Ubuntu 9.10
Evince 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.2

Marking text containing ligatures or umlauts changes the display of the corresponding characters. A similar problem is described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/39321/comments/5. I attach two screenshots that apply to this file (page 2): http://www.zvisionwelt.de/typokurz.pdf.

There's another mistake: "Typografie" behind "Schräge" is not displayed slanted in evince-special-characters-wrong.png.

Confirming both errors on Lucid 10.04 updated to the latest poppler Ubuntu package:

Uname: Linux 2.6.32-10-generic i686
Packages: evince 2.29.5-0ubuntu1
                 poppler 0.12.3-0ubuntu1

Do xpdf and/or Adobe reader also have this problem?

There is also something weird going on when selecting that section of text. It automatically selects more than I wanted to select - try it and you'll see what I mean. I wonder if it was originally a table.

Changed in evince (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

I know what you mean, I observed the same before. And yes, originally it was a table but that's an information not included in this PDF file because it's not a tagged PDF file. AR 9 and Xpdf don't have this problem; screenshots attached.

Guys, this bug report was submitted almost five years ago! I don't know whether this bug is still present in recent versions of Evince. Meanwhile I switched to Mac OS (after 16 years with GNU/Linux). You do not necessarily need typokurz.pdf to reproduce this bug (use any PDF file with umlauts or ligatures)–but you can find it here: http://bit.ly/typokurz-cb.
