Micah, It is not a bug
"Рус" is the first three letters of the phrase "РУСская раскладка" (russian layout)

There's no distinct english words for "russian language" and "russian country", but in russian there are "russkiy" (people) and "rossiyskiy" (citizen).

#6, it is not "РУСская раскладка", it is "Россия - чувашский/чувашская латиница/DOS/калмыкский/..../русский/.../татарский/...". Even there are tabs "by language" and "by country" in dialog window to add layot. but i think keyboard switcher applet support only categorising by country.

keyboard switcher applet shows "USA" when i want to use latin letters, so it should show "Рос" or "РФ" when i want to use cyrillic letters.
but better would be if it show layots not by country, this is feature request.

IC Raibow (icrbow) wrote :

"Рос" would look ugly and alien to russian user. And i think there's a some sort of habit from early DOS/Win times where layout indicator said "RU", which reads "РУ", not "РО".

approvement:
i added great britain and iraq and it shows "GBr" and "Irq" for them.

but there is some layots shown other way:
if i add "Algeria" it show "Ara" which is not country name but language name.

but when i add "Tatar" it should not show "Рус", because is is not one layot for Russian language, but just layot used in Russia. it seems that same bug with other layots of Russia, i have tested with Chuvash and Udmurt, they are shown as Rus2 and Rus3.

Looks like they should sign "Tat", "Chv" and "Udm" (;

yes.
i think now these are just layot names that can be named not only by country, but any way, i thought they are by country when i reported this bug, may be that was designed to be by country but some arabic countries all use one arabic layot and signed that for all of them as "Ara".
also i have tried to add Switzerland French and German, they are signed as "Che" and "Che2" - may be, i do not know, also uncomfortable sign, and so indeed most of layots are signed by country.

i think there is no need to mark this bug as invalid and report it other way , because this report is quite correct, because it/that looks like somebody(one person) named full names of layots as/like Russia - Chuvash , and this is correct, may be he/she used as instance Switzerland layots, and then somebody else(another person) quite correctly but not perfectly (perfectly well) named short marks/signs of all of them as Rus meaning country, and then somebody else(another, third person) incorrectly(but/though may be more pretty/comfortable as said in message #12 here) translated them to russian as "Рус".

One another example to this problem is "LAm" for several "Latin America" countries and languages. So these are by region, not by country nor by language.

Also there are much exploration of this bug in this thread/bug report, and no need not to use this report.

Just i have not provided more detailed information regarding which layot i use, this is because i had known that other layots of Russia also marked as "Рус" and decided that that was intended to be meaning Russia, and generalised this report for all layots of Russia.

This also can be generalised for all layots.

edit/correct message #13 by me: there should be "i have tested with Chuvash and Udmurt, they are shown as Рус2 and Рус3" , and 2 and 3 are written with subscript.
