Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.10 AMD-64
apt-cache policy linux:
Candidate: 2.6.31.17.30
Version Table:
2.6.31.17.30 0
2.6.31.16.29 0

Hardware: laptop MSI A6005

During any download both screen and keyboard freeze (and everything else).
- This is happening both in kubuntu (KDE) and ubuntu (gnome).
- Any download on Firefox, Konqueror and even Update Manager download freezes on "8 of 201"

- It once froze in command line mode, after I logged in by pressing CTRL-ALT-F2, not during download and not even connected to network.

Update:
1. solution proposed on forum:
    >>>>edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" <<<<<
    does not help.

2. I found the conditions that lead to crash: any sort of download
    a) any download on konqueror (browser that came with kubuntu)
    b) any download on Firefox
    c) Update Manager download of updates, crashes on "8 of 201"

summary: - ubuntu 9.10 crashes freezes locks up a few minutes after boot
+ ubuntu 9.10 locks up during any web client or "Update Manager" download

I tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.04 -- both froze before installation even started, even "verify disk" does not work. (and the disk is ok, i checked on other PC)

I successfully installed OpenSUSE --- it has the same problem!!!! Works only until I start "Software Update"
openSUSE kernel 2.6.31.5

IT WORKS!
Kudos to michael37, connected laptop via wired network, and all system updates went through.
Once System Updates completed, the wireless driver has been fixed, and now I have no more lock ups with OpenSUSE.

next step: reinstalling Ubuntu, and once that works too I will close this bug.

Hi Shompol,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 513420

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
