Update:
1. solution proposed on forum:
    >>>>edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" <<<<<
    does not help.

2. I found the conditions that lead to crash: any sort of download
    a) any download on konqueror (browser that came with kubuntu)
    b) any download on Firefox
    c) Update Manager download of updates, crashes on "8 of 201"
