IT WORKS!
Kudos to michael37, connected laptop via wired network, and all system updates went through.
Once System Updates completed, the wireless driver has been fixed, and now I have no more lock ups with OpenSUSE.

next step: reinstalling Ubuntu, and once that works too I will close this bug.
