Bug Description

Up to now I was successfully working with version 46. ..... I installed version 47....
In this new installed versions (47-2 and 47-3) :
using WIN-XP pro after loading an *.svg- file (self built one) and trying to SAVE AS in both program versions 47-2 and 47-3
PC was blocked .... HANGING ( no commands were accepted), I had to kill process !

I deleted this new installation and activated the old version 46, here SAVE AS is working correctly with the same files ??

Although it appears to be hanging, what is really happening is more insidious: the dialog is invisible. You can cancel the invisible dialog with any of the following:
- Esc
- Alt-f4
- Alt-space close

You can even save the file, you just can't see what you are doing. For instance I can click File->Save as, type "C:\foo.svg" and press enter, and the file is created the titlebar is updated as "C:\foo.svg - Inkscape" and inkscape becomes responsive again.

Clearly inkscape has switched to native file dialogs (because you are far far more brave than I), is there a command line switch to force GTK dialogs?

Possibly of note, since it really shouldn't do this: My desktop icons disappear for a split second and then repaint everytime I use one of the save dialogs, but not one of the open dialogs (there is no bug with those).

Sorry for the noise, but I found a workaround of sorts. If you disable the windows themeing (aka uxtheme, aka Luna, etc) then the save dialog is no longer invisible, although it does look very odd. There is roughly 400 pixels of empty vertical space (grey background) between the "Save as type" and the "Title" label and textbox. Screenshot: http://imgur.com/Ct4c9.png But it does work, and it doesn't make my desktop icons flash like before.

Thanks for investigating this, this is definitely a weird one, possibly same as Bug 493588 ?

No, the switch to native Windows dialogs is permanent.

Would you be willing to try to trap any exit messages that may be generated, using the method outlined at :
http://kaioa.com/node/63
This involves running a small utility called inkscapec.exe from a DOS prompt to capture output messages.

I have Inkskape running on two Computers
One has an older installation of Windows XP Professional SP3 where Inkscape runs without problems.
The other one has a fresh installation of Windows XP Professional SP3 without the internet explorer core components where I experience the "hidden save window" in Inkscape.
I did not have this problem before I reinstalled XP on this computer.
Both Computers are themed and both have the same uxtheme.dll (Version 6.0.2900.3311)
When I switch back to the Classic Windows Theme I get the save Window but in a very odd size. It is too high for my screen and I can just see half of the Title input field.

When I run Inkscapec.exe I get this:

(inkscape.exe:3592): Gtk-WARNING **: Das Symbol ╗object-visible½ konnte nicht gefunden werden,
ebenso wenig wie das Thema ╗hicolor½. M÷glicherweise m³ssen Sie es installieren.

Sie k÷nnen sich eine Kopie herunterladen unter:
        http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/releases

** (inkscape.exe:3592): WARNING **: Family name Sans does not have an entry in the font lister.

The first message appears on startup. In german it says that the symbol ╗object-visible½ and the theme ╗hicolor½ were not found and that I can get the theme from the posted addresse.

The second one appears when I draw a rectangle.

Hope this helps a bit

thank you for the info concerning uxtheme and the Classic theme. Unfortunately, the two messages concerning icons and fonts are fairly standard messages in Windows, and are not related to the missing Save As... dialog
