Bug Description

A message appeared to say that the Uniconvertor failed. Unfortunately it would not allow me to copy the text in the error message and whilst trying to copy and paste it put another error message up to say that unexpected error had occurred and shut down.
Hope this helps, keep up the good work!

2) Could you please add a 'steps to reproduce' list containing information about what you where doing when the python message popped up? Where you saving as WMF or SK1 or PLT file? or copying some text in Inkscape? or using a different extension with 'Live Preview' toggled on?
3) «Opened and closed outlook» - could you clarify on that too please, I don't understand what you mean.

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
I'm using version 0.47 on XP professional (5.1, build 2600).

I imported an autocad dxf file into inkscape.
Ungrouped the image and deleted some unwanted lines.
Locked the original layer.
Added another layer.
Added leader lines and text to this new layer.
Clicked on the microsoft outlook icon on my quick launch toolbar.
Microsoft outlook began loading.
As outlook opened a python window opened (The window was blank apart from a
flashing cursor in the upper left of the window).
I closed oulook using the red cross in the upper right corner.
The python window closed and the error dialog opened with the Uniconvertor
error reported earlier.
I tried to copy the text from the dialog without success and eventually
closed.
I received an unexpected error message and inkscape closed.

I have since tried to repeat this error and have found that inkscape seems
ok if I save the file I am working on before opening another program. If I
don't save the file the python window opens over the top of the program I am
opening and locks inkscape. I have not seen the original error message
again, inkscape simply locks and has to be terminated with Ctrl, Alt, Del.
Hope this helps in some way.
Karl

a) Could it be that the error only occurs if you recently copied text in Inkscape to the clipboard before launching Outlook?
b) Does Outlook have some kind of clipboard monitoring function/option?

Background of my questions: on linux it is known that third-party applications that monitor the clipboard (mostly download managers watching for URLs copied to the clipboard from any program) interfere with Inkscape's internal clipboard handling and trigger an apparently random input or output extension (most are based on python and some display error messages from UniConvertor - a python based helper application for some import and export file formats).

Best Regards,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been trying a few things out.

I opened the svg file I had been working on during the previous crash and
added various inkscape shapes to it.
I did not save the file.
I then opened outlook - no problems
Closed outlook - no problems
Opened Internet explorer - no problems
Closed Internet explorer - no problems
I then imported another dxf file, ran the same programs, no problems.
I then copied and pasted text and ran the programs again, no problems.
I then opened oulook again and clicked on reply to contact you and the
python window opened and shut down inkscape.
I had a message again this time stating that it could not find fonts.
I have repeated the exercise of copying and pasting text and then opening
outlook and it has crashed on one occasion but not others.
I am unable to reproduce the crash on a consistent basis.
But it does only seem to crash when text is involved, as you suggested.
I recall that it crashed yesterday when using word so the text issue would
seem to be the most likely.
I'll keep trying with text based issues but I will be packing up for the day
in about 30 mins so it may be tomorrow before I have anything to report.
Regards,
Karl

I have been working with Inkscape for most of the morning without any
problems.
I opened Microsoft outlook first and have left it running in the background.
I have opened and closed inkscape on several occasions, imported dxf and
created text all without any crashes.
I have also copy and pasted the text and modified the dxf after importing
without any problems.
I have had several other applications open at the same time as inkscape and
have also been opening and closing them down without any lock ups or
crashes.
Regards,
Karl

Something similar happens to me now too, using UbuntuStudio Lucid Lynx. When several applications are running, Inkscape randomly gives the same Uniconverter error, and then opens a dialog box for exporting the file to postscript, which I did not ask. On one occasion, Gnome froze completely, I had to reboot.

@bartje - do you have any clipboard-monitoring application or tool running in the background? Please see Bug #418242 “Incorrect call to output plugins (with persistent error message) on copy” which deals with a similar issue on linux.

I don't have the clipboard-monitoring application described as in but #418242, but it does happen when I have netbeans running, mostly when I switch applications after a while (a minute or two). Netbeans is java based, so, there is a similarity. Perhaps Netbeans has a similar clipboard monitoring code, that triggers the error.
Having reproduced the error, after starting inkscape from the terminal, this shows up, I hope it helps in tracing the problem :
