Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Open the folder <filename>Local Folders</filename> and look for files with names such as <filename>Inbox</filename>. Select a file and press <guibutton>Open</guibutton>. If you have many email messages, you may have to wait a while for the file to be checked before you can continue.

There should be some more instruction given to the user about what and especialy where this "Local Folders" would be located.

I can see how that might be confusing, esp. if users don't store their emails in the Local Folders area. I updated this text to use "Local Folders" as an example, and also added "imap.gmail.com" as an example since gmail is very popular. Fix committed to Lucid development branch.

If they use imap then this quide does not apply to them. T-bird, by default, only stores mail from pop mail accouts in mbox format. And with imap the user would automaticaly get there mails once the configure the account.

Instead the guide should point out that the "Local Folders" folder is located inside the "Mail" or "ImapMail folder that they copyed during the preparation steps.

Acttually i think the quide should point out that it is not nesesery to make backups of your emails if you use imap, especialy as they will just be frustrated once they get to the restoring par, because Thunderbird didnt store the mbox files in the ImapMail folder by default, it does however store a bunch of MSF files with excatly the same name (different extension) that the user will likly think are the mbox files (mbox files dosn't have an extension), Evolution will just gray out all file types and not let the user continue with out any way for the user to know what hi is doing wrong, and probably thinking that he just lost all his emails.

-----

Heres a suggestion for the new text.

Open the folder <filename>Local Folders</filename>, witch is found in side the <filename>Mail</filename> folder, look for files with names such as <filename>Inbox</filename>, <filename>Unsent Messages</filename>, <filename>Sent</filename>. Select a file and press <guibutton>Open</guibutton>. If you have many email messages, you may have to wait a while for the file to be checked before you can continue.

----

Changes should then also be made to line 756 to no longer mention the ImapMail folder.

Around line 712 a note should be added stating that if the user is using imap, he/she does not need to make a back up of the messages, as they are already backed up on the server.

Thanks for your feedback, your points are valid. When I tested, I was able to transfer email from an IMAP account using this method, though it is not necessary. Here is a revised suggestion, with a few adjustments and spelling fixes:

<listitem><para>Open the folder <filename>Local Folders</filename>, which is found inside the <filename>Mail</filename> folder, and look for files with names such as <filename>Inbox</filename>, <filename>Unsent Messages</filename>, and <filename>Sent</filename>. If you did not store your email in the <filename>Local Folders</filename> area, choose the appropriate folder in <filename>Mail</filename>. Select a file and press <guibutton>Open</guibutton>. If you have many email messages, you may have to wait a while for the file to be checked before you can continue.</para></listitem>

Also, here is a suggestion for a note about IMAP and SMTP:

<note><para>You do not need to export mail messages if you use IMAP for retrieving email from the your mail server - the email is still stored on the server. You only need to export mail messages if you use SMTP to retrieve email from your mail server. This is because by default the email will not be persisted on the server after it has been downloaded to your computer when using SMTP.</para></note>

Finally, the line numbers you are listing do not match what I see in the source, where are you getting them from?

Much better... but SMTP is for sending mail, POP3 is the one you want to mention ;)

The line numbers are from the Karmic PO file that i got from launchpad.

Oops! Thanks so much, I'll fix that locally, I haven't committed any other changes since I changed the status earlier. I think this is a sign that I need to step away from the computer for a bit.

Here is a proposed patch to my original changes. Please have a look and let me know if you approve. It includes changing the import directions, adding a note about not needing to transfer IMAP, and removing the mention of the ImapMail folder. Thanks.

By the way, if you are interested in proposing patches yourself, I can help you get that setup. In that case, you can provide a patch and we will review it, then apply it assuming it looks good, or offer advice to further improve it.

Looks good.

I might be interested in being able to submit patches, but atm. I spend most of my spare time translating.

Ok, I applied that proposed patch, any further work on this material should be in a new bug report. If you do want to get involved with submitting patches, have a look here - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DocumentationTeam/SystemDocumentation
