inkscape built with Gtk+/Quartz crashes when a second file is opened

Whenever I try opening two files with content (doesnt happen with empty files), inkscape 0.47 aqua PPC (homebrew) crashes. In the terminal I get:

This does no longer occur in inkscape 0.47 AQUA, devel-r9101, OS 10.4.11. Opening new windows is slow and getting slower with more windows open (#17 took 5.5 sec.), but 20 open windows is no problem now.

Found a workaround by accident:

Open a data file -
then open a new empty window, then open a second data file -
(if you like) open a new empty window, then open a new data file,
and carry on opening - I stopped at #14.

Opening a second data file is possible, when you have an empty window open and in the very front.
If the empty window is not in front, inkscape will crash.

I can go past this bug by commenting out, in SPDesktopWidget::setWindowSize in desktop-widget.cpp, the call window->reshow_with_initial_size() as follows:

It really looks like a gtk/quartz upstream bug. Something that has been fixed on the X11 side, but not on the quartz side.

Reproduced with Inkscape 0.48+devel r10101 on OS X 10.5.8. (i386), gtk2 @2.22.1_1+no_x11+quartz:

Also: Inkscape (default, new preferences.xml) fails to open with an empty document if a custom default template explicitly sets a window size (unless 'window->reshow_with_initial_size ();' is commented out as described in comment #5).

Changing the settings for saving & restoring the windows geometry (size &position) in 'Inkscape Preferences > Windows' to
 [x] Don't save window geometry
seems to help as temporary workaround.

AFAICT it removes functionality from Inkscape, so it's of limited use as a stable workaround. Also, (IIRC) there are still cases where the same type of crash occurs, even when that line of code is commented out. It does give a hint though where what the actual issue is.

I really cannot confirm this: especially creating new shapes is slower and noticeably less snappier than my builds with X11 [1], as well as the overall handling of the GUI parts (e.g. Window resizing).

[1] ( both from current trunk, running side by side, in the unbundled command line version for now, on OS X 10.5.8 i386, X11 version running under Xquartz 2.4.0)

In any case, the fix was backported to stable in 9860.
