Bug Description

This is actually the nastiest bug in current karmic for me. When you mouse scroll in website with java content (happens often for with these: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1067810), then X crashes and everything goes back to gdm screen. It happens mostly when I'm down in the page and mouse scroll up back into the direction of the java content. I have an Intel video card.

There are some similar bugs like bug 478338, but that one is not exactly the same, so I filed a new one.

We think this might be related to the window manager since awesome wm does not have these problems. We hope to get some feedback from devs at some point since this is a really nasty bug.

This also happens with Firefox 3.6 and even if I update Java6 to update 17.

Karmic + FF 3.5.7 + Java Plug-in 1.6.0_15

Confirmed. Nasty! I'm a java applet developer - I use openprocessing.org - if you scroll on a page that has an applet, X crashes and you go back to the GDM login. What a pain!

This bug is still present in FF 3.6 and 3.7, even in the latest Chromium builds.Iit must be a problem with the java plugin.

Just confirmed in Karmic + Java Plug-in 1.6.0_15 + Opera 10.10 as well - it's not browser dependent. I didn't have this problem in Jaunty, but it's possible my plugin was just slightly older.

This isn't the right place for this bug - where should it go? It happens in Firefox AND Opera, and it happens only when you use the mouse wheel or the scroll bars to scroll. If you use keyboard navigation on the page, it doesn't crash at all. This leads me to believe that it's a Karmic mouse or X problem.

One more thing - I'm running Ubuntu from the alternate installer with full disk encryption. Wonder if that could matter?

I used a regular ubuntu install, so it's not the alternate installer. I will assign the bug to X.org. Since you are a java dev, maybe you know better as to where to file java bugs.

affects: firefox-3.5 (Ubuntu) → xorg-server (Ubuntu)

Found out today that the bug doesn't manifest in awesome window manager - so it must be gnome or whatever window manager is default in karmic.

And can you reproduce the bug in both the compiz and the metacity window manager?

After a bit of testing, I don't see this bug anymore in lucid with the IcedTead 1.8 firefox plugin.

As I said above, I don't get this bug anymore since upgrading to lucid. Maybe codekiln can confirm this since he also saw that bug on his machine.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
