It's not a browser specific bug. The java runtime (openjdk & sun jdk ,too) let crash the x-server.

affects: firefox-3.5 (Ubuntu) → openjdk-6 (Ubuntu)

I can confirm the bug, RealVNC 4.1 Applet/Application crashes the X-Server when using a composing window manager (Compiz, KWin with composing effects; metacity isn't affected). I'm using the nvidia-glx-185 Driver.
I have attached the Java Application, so you can test it. (You can also download it from: http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html)
You can start it with: java -jar VNC.jar
(You need a vncserver, The easiest way to get one is:
apt-get install tightvncserver
vncserver)

I haven't seen it in Lucid anymore. But I cannot confirm 100% that it's completely fixed.

I still have this bug on Ubuntu lucid 64 bits. Random bug, doesn't always crash.

The X server in tightvnc-1.3.9 has problems on 64-bit systems, this was fixed in tightvnc-1.3.10. Patch for 1.3.9 sources available at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2570977&group_id=14067&atid=314067
