Bug Description

Binary package hint: hal

I have recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 now I find that I have lost the use of Mozilla fire fox and can not access the www.
The only page I can access is the ubuntu 9.10 wellcome page. When I try to do a search the computer tries to load but continues only to attempt to do so.The computer connects with the wireless router which is working properly with other computers on Vista and XP. The system worked well on 9.04 and previously on 8.10. Will i have to reload 8.10 which I still have on CD or isthere any other way to correct the problem??

Paul, thank you for taking the time to report this issue. First, as a test, are you able to perform system updates. If so, then it means that internet access is working properly. If not, then internet access is not working.

Also, could you try using another browser like Konqueror to see if you can access the internet that way?

Changed in hal (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Moving this out of hal... as it definitely does not belong there at this moment. More information will determine if this is a network-manager issue or not.

Quoting WeatherGod <email address hidden>:Thank you for taking an
interest,I am
not able to receive system updates. The only page I am able to access is Ubuntu
9.10 welcome page.I originally loaded the new system down through update
manager,it took several hours.Since then the problems have started.I have gone
to the trouble of downloading 9.10 on to a CD through my wireless network on a
vista comp.I have ran it along side the 1st 9.10 download thinking there might
have been an error on the 1st download, however I still can not gain access to
the net and can only access again the welcome page.My network is working
properly and network manager is showing that I am accessing my router and
network, something is blocking webpages being received on the new system.I
thought it may be a proxy add on or firewall but the 2nd system has no add ons
or firewall so I am at a loss what is causing the problem.Any help would be
appreciated.

Could you please clarify your previous message. Are you stating that a computer which does have internet access failed to update?

As for the ping test, if it is possible, you can copy-n-paste the message to a text file and save it to a floppy disk or a usb thumb drive and then upload the file using a computer with working internet connection. If it isn't possible, could you please give a description of what happened?

If the ping test failed, then there is something wrong with the network configuration, and more diagnostics will be needed. If possible, a temporary ethernet connection to the router would be helpful in giving the problem computer internet access to facilitate diagnosis.

got the error message which I forwarded to you.

Idid the ping test in a terminal on a second computer but unable to copy and
paste result however I will try again.

I will try the erthernet connection from the problem computer and see if I can
gain access that way but I have 3 other computers on that network and they are
working correctly.

Paul, one step at a time... the way we can tell that Firefox isn't (explicitly) the culprit is because the ping tests failed while on the wireless.

Now that you have a working ethernet connection, I would like for you to run the following command: apport-collect -p network-manager 484856
Make sure you run this command while both the wireless and wired connections are established. This should gather usefull information for us to see.

Paul, just a thought... could you test your wireless connection with the rest of your computers disconnected from the internet?
I am noticing that your computer is being assigned an IP number that would indicate that it is the first one on your network. If there are other computers on your wireless network, and one of them already has that IP address, it is possible that could be the source of your troubles.

message,Do you mean carry out the apport test whilst all ofthe other computers
are closed down or do you mean carry out the ping test in the same way.I am
pretty sure that no other computers were switched on and connected when I did
the apport test. You may be right about the IP address and it certainly should
not be the master or the first on the network.

Paul, lets run the ping test in three different scenarios. Start off each scenario with all machines disconnected and your router off.

Scenarios:
1. All of the other computers off of your router. Only the Ubuntu machine is on wireless.
2. All of the other computers on your router first. Then bring the Ubuntu machine online.
3. Ubuntu machine online first, then bring on the other machines.

51 on previous tests. all 10 pkts were transfered and received..I also noticed
in the error console that 2 error messages were shown and one in particular
referred to file:///usr/lib/xul runner-1.9.1/components/feedProcessor.js line
1440
It appears to me that something is blocking or not connecting. Obviously I can
not search even though the google page is shown.

Paul, this is quite a perplexing issue. Could you please try another browser like Opera, and see if you continue to have issues?

Also, could you try using the LiveCD version of Ubuntu on one of your other machines to see if internet issues occur on them?

Quoting WeatherGod <email address hidden>:totally agree but this may
throw some
light on the problem, tried opera on the ubuntu system but it would not load
Tried the live Cd version of ubuntu in Windows Vista and the same problem
occurred ,the system loaded up OK,connected up to my network OK,although
received a message re restricted drivers,as sonn as went on Mozilla
firefox, the welcome ubuntu page loaded but could not get any further as the
same problem happened as on the original system when the machine continued to
attempt to load but failed. The problem appears to lie with the CD bearing in
mind I have now loaded the ubuntu system down twice, once through update
manager
which resulted in the same problem and once on to CD through a windows based
computer,it may be I have to return to 9.04.Any sugestions?

Paul, that was very illuminating. Mainly, because the same symptom occurred to each machine, and (I am assuming) that they have different hardware, then this is probably not a driver issue. Most likely, this is a configuration issue.

Examine the settings you have for your Windows machines and see how they compare to the wireless settings (wlan0) of your laptop. See how they differ (assuming that they are both automatically set). It is possible that network-manager is not properly auto-configuring anymore.

Quoting WeatherGod <email address hidden>:It would appear that network manager
is not configured properly.Ihave tried to obtain a further copy of 9.10 from
ubuntu web site after the download and burn I can not get the cd to run from
boot and over ride the faulty system. As I outlined network manager
worked ok in
9.04 and I may have to revert to that system unless you have a better
sugestion.

Quoting WeatherGod <email address hidden>:I have loaded down Ubuntu 9.10 a
further two occasions each time errors have occurred when i have tried to load
it on to the problem machine so i am forming the opinion that unless i can
obtain a perfect cd of 9.10 without error then i will have to revert to
the old
system, is it possible to obtain a cd of ubuntu without errors?

Paul, in case my message never got to you, I would suggest using Bittorrent to guarrantee a perfect download. Bittorrent verifies the bits that it transfers as it downloads.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect 484856 and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
