Bug Description

Binary package hint: file-roller

Drag'n drop of a file from file-roller in Gnome to a local folder is unreliable here. It fails 1 time out of 5 here approximately.

When it fails, it gives the following error message:
You don't have the right permissions to extract archives in the folder "file:///home/chris/Documents/ASSET/WP5-T1/VTT/VTT-TML-Integration/Code/Web%20services/xds.txttion"

Note that I'm actually trying to drop the file to this location (where the permissions are ok):
/home/chris/Documents/ASSET/WP5-T1/VTT/VTT-TML-Integration/Code/Web services/

I have no idea where the trailing "xds.txttion" comes from and of course it does not exist on my local filesystem. The error always refers to this folder name.

Just a hint, I think it has something to do with the time you wait until you release the mouse button to actually drop the file in the folder. I think the behavior is as follows:
1. Press mouse button on a file in file-roller, drag the mouse to the local folder, wait until a '+' appears on the left of the dragged file icon and then release the button -> It works (If you wait a sufficient amount of time, it never crashes)
2. Press mouse button on a file in file-roller, drag the mouse to the local folder, immediately release the mouse button before the '+' appears on the left of the file icon -> It does not do anything, the file is not extracted, no error (probably too fast).
3. Crash case: I think it crashes if you release the mouse button relatively fast, just before the '+' appears on the icon (or maybe at this moment).

I might be wrong but this is my best guess and I hope it can help identifying the issue since it is not easy to reproduce probably.

I'm using:
Version: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1

Can we open this bug? It happens to me every time I'm trying to drag n drop from File-Roller to my raid-5 volume mounted in /mnt/raid/Mamoth and linked on my desktop.

step to reproduce :

1: download this file : http://download.blender.org/durian/score/Jan_Morgenstern-Sintel-MP3.zip
2: open it with File-Roller
3: select a file and drag-it into my raid volume
4: get the error : You don't have the right permissions to extract archives in the folder « file:///home/nevada/Bureau/Mamoth/Music/Jan%20Morgenstern/Elephant%20Dreams%20mp3/xds.txt »

To extract the files I must use File>extract and choose my folder.

Maybe a right problem in my folders, but why the extract command work fine when the drag n drop don't ?
What useful information can I provide to resolve this problem?

This happens to me on Xubuntu Natty, dropping files to a Thunar window on a folder to which I have full permissions. I haven't yet found a pattern behind the failures.

This is happening to me on 11.10 with File Roller 3.2.1. I am getting am trying to drag and drop and I am getting:

Extraction not performed

You don't have the right permissions to extract archives in the folder "file:///home/elijah/websites/loc.gitsite.gary.com/sites/all/modules/features/articles/xds.txtodules"

Not sure what to do but thought I would add it here. If I go up one level I can drag and drop and then drag the files/folders into the desired folder within Nautilus.

I don't think the duplicate status is wrong because the other bug is a lockup of the whole X, while this is only an error message.

I also experiment this error message on Ubuntu 14.10. There is clearly a problem in the path that is shown in the error message. For example right now I got:
“You don't have the right permissions to extract archives in the folder "xds.txtules"”
The “xds.txt” part is always constant while the end “ules” is actually the end of the name of one of the parent folders (in this case, the 11th parent folder, which has a depth of 9 from / so its seems to be in the middle of the full path).

I was unable to determine what would trigger this but for me it occurs currently once in 3 times. Another time in 3, the drag and drop simply does nothing (or at least there is no feedback) so in the in it seems to work only one third of the time…
