I can reproduce this bug. Any video imported into subtitleeditor via the menu "Video > Open" causes the program to crash with the following error:

komputes@mini:~$ subtitleeditor
application run: <some_number>
subtitleeditor: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.

This is an important bug when it comes to the subtitleeditor project. We are using subtitleeditor 0.30.0-1ubuntu1 when upstream has released 0.34.0. Please test the latest version and post results. If stable, put in PPA. After testing the new version should replace this old broken version in Lucid.

This is a known bug in Subtitle Editor (see http://gna.org/bugs/?14386) and should be fixed since version 0.35.0 (current version is 0.35.1). I haven't had time to compile and test the latest version to confirm that this bug is fixed. Anyone else?

I tried now, but I got stuck on this:

checking for GSTREAMERMM... configure: error: Package requirements
(gstreamermm-0.10 >= 0.10.4) were not met:

Requested 'gstreamermm-0.10 >= 0.10.4' but version of gstreamermm is 0.10.2

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Would be better if developer could at least provide static binaries (I know
it's hard, but Ubuntu goes a bit slow sometimes with newer versions).

hi,

same problem on my side as well, as original bug says as well as error (reported in previous note) on my try to compile the latest version.

This is really disappointing, the only editor on my ubuntu box that seems to be not the best one (compared to windows alternatives) but the one I can live with is crashing frequently :(

If you want to renew the version on your own risk (some of these packages are experimental) then this is what I did and it worked.
This guide assumes that you have "build-essential" and "checkinstall" installed.

1. sudo apt-get build-dep subtitleeditor
2. completely remove these packages: libgstreamermm-0.10-2, libgstreamermm-0.10-dev, subtitleeditor, libsubtitleeditor0

3. download these packages:
http://packages.debian.org/experimental/libgstreamermm-0.10-2
http://packages.debian.org/experimental/libgstreamermm-0.10-dev

4. install them in the same order as listed.

5. download the latest subtitleeditor: http://download.gna.org/subtitleeditor/0.36/subtitleeditor-0.36.0.tar.gz
6. unpack and cd subtitleeditor-0.36.0
7. ./configure --prefix=/usr
8. make
9a. (only if not using english language) export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
9. sudo checkinstall (if it asks something about adding some files into the package, you can say "no")
10. enjoy

just checked version of subtitleeditor in lucid and seems like there this old version still present - 0.30 (see http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=subtitleeditor+&searchon=names&suite=lucid&section=all)
but on their official homepage there is 0.36.

So I hope latest version is gonna get to lucid, or are there any other plans?

Dear Märt Suga,

subtitleeditor can't be built on karmic due to its dependencies (gstreamermm stills on 0.10.2).

Dear Bremm,

I described the steps that worked for me on Karmic. In order to satisfy dependencies you have to install experimental debian packages (described in step 3). If you manually uninstall older versions and then install these packages in right order, dependencies will be satisfied.

Ricardo @ pplware sent us an email about three weeks ago about adding the latest Subtitle Editor 0.36.0 to our PPA because Ubuntu Karmic is about 6 versions behind the official release of Subtitle Editor. I initially though it cannot be done for Ubuntu Karmic because of a dependency (version) which was missing even in Lucid. But now that package has been added to Lucid, I've uploaded it to our PPA for Karmic so now you can basically install Subtitle Editor 0.36.0 in both Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid using the WebUpd8 PPA.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
$ sudo apt-get-update && sudo apt-get install subtitleeditor
