Bug Description

server linux distro/version : ubuntu 9.10, clients linux distro/version : ubuntu 9.04

Printer : HP All in One CM1312 MFP

Both printing and scanning work locally.

Sane is configured to be accessed from the network through xinetd.
Access is granted but several errors show up and then the client is exited. Here's the syslog from the server when the connection attempt is made :
Nov 11 20:18:51 olivier-desktop saned[3508]: init: access granted to olivier@192.168.1.50
Nov 11 20:18:53 olivier-desktop saned[3508]: io/hpmud/musb.c 136: unable get_string_descriptor -1: Operation not permitted

Nov 11 20:18:54 olivier-desktop saned[3508]: saned exiting

About network printing now : Simply not working. I've shared it in the cups parameters, for all users/machines on my network, but no client is able to see the shared printer.
Maybe it is two separate issues ? Waiting for any input, thank you.

This worked in 8.04, but after upgrading to 9.04, then 9.10 it has stopped working.. Scanning works locally, but not remotely, same text as above.

Scanner/printer is Bus 002 Device 006: ID 03f0:7e04 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet F4100 Printer series
(Actually an F4180)

I never tried this while on 9.04, that was just an intermediate step on the way to 9.10 for me.

Changed in ubuntu:
status: New → Incomplete
status: Incomplete → Invalid

far from 'Invalid', this problem seems widely repeatable and persists in 10.04. See Bug #465055

About the sane problem, you need to change the system user sane is
running with to 'root', in you xined conf file. It should be sane, but
as you can see, it's not working.
About your printing problem, have you tried an ipp connection ? That's
what I do and it's working fine
