Bug Description
This patch will be included in the update of Lucid to 2.6.32.12 stable upstream (see Bug #575853)

os: ubuntu 9.10 (but was also happening on 9.04)
machine: lenovo 3000 y410 laptop
alsa-info.sh link: http://
I have a lenovo 300 y410 laptop. The internal mic worked fine under windows but has never worked under ubuntu. Neither Ubuntu 9.04 or Ubuntu 9.10 have it working. All other audio works fine just the internal mic does not work. I have tried going into alsamixer and making sure that the input is set to internal mic and that the internal mic is not muted but still no luck. I am not sure what to do from here. I have included the link to my alsa-info.sh info above. Thanks for any help you can provide.

None of your input device mixer controls are set to internal mic. Further,
your internal mic is muted. Lastly, your internal mic boost needs to be
raised.

To Daniel T Chen...
Yes, that is because since the internal mic does not work I put the controls back to use an external mic.. since the external mic jack works just fine... I have already tried setting the controls via alsamixer.. to internal mic.. and unmuting it and raising both the mic level and boost level .. none of which has worked.
Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote : | #17 |
Okay, then please install linux-backports
reboot.

I tried going back into alsamixer and changed the settings on internal

still nothing.

I mean that you would want to raise the levels of 'Capture',1 and
'Capture',2. E.g.,
amixer set 'Capture',1 85%
amixer set 'Capture',2 85%
shadowfoxx (ed-shadowfoxx) wrote : | #25 |
oh, ok no problem...
Please see new amixer output above... I put everything in alsamixer unmuted and at 100%... unfortunately the internal mic is still not working.
Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote : | #26 |
Err, you don't want to unmute everything, particularly not IEC958,
Off-hook, Caller ID.
shadowfoxx (ed-shadowfoxx) wrote : | #27 |
ok. IEC958, Off-hook, Caller ID have been muted again.. it still does not work... I'm just trying to get to whatever configuration you feel should be optimal as I do not feel that the problem is with the configuration. I have been using ubuntu since 9.04 which is not very long but long enough to have tried pretty much every combination of configuration changes in alsamixer you can think of and it has still never worked.
Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote : | #28 |
Ok, so the final recourse is to try a newer sound driver, e.g.,
http://
which has quite a few Realtek HDA fixes.
shadowfoxx (ed-shadowfoxx) wrote : | #29 |

I then rebooted and went into alsamixer to check all the configurations are correct .. I tested the internal mic.. but it is still not working.

You're still using linux-backports
alsa-driver, not the snapshot you compiled.
Purge linux-backports
20091110 alsa-driver stable snapshot.

Just to point out a possibility for what went wrong... should the install be "sudo make install"? If so, it would probably be a good idea to do a 'make clean', and start over. Also, wouldn't a reboot be needed after the install?

Yes, one needs root privileges to write to /lib/modules

Yes, a reboot is necessary.

I just wanted to add that there has been a breakthrough. information has been posted @ https:/
a quick synopsis:
1) I downloaded a file called hda_codec.zip from http://
2) I unzipped the file in my home directory
3) Open up a terminal and type:
sudo cp ~/hda_codec.py /dev/shm/
cd /dev/shm/
sudo python ./hda_analyzer.py
4) changed VREF setting to 50 in Node 0x19
bingo.. internal mic started working.. but on reboot nothing was saved and mic was no longer working.

I know this is a long ticket and has a lot of info in it.. so I will mention, again, that on line #53 it does have what I did to get it working. It did actually work after doing the steps I outlined on post #53 above in this ticket. The problem is that I, unfortunately, do not know enough about this stuff to know what that is exactly doing and how to get ubuntu to 1) have that done by default and 2) how to get it to stay after reboot. I don't mean to sound rude as that is not my intention but I do just want to bring it up again since this is a long ticket and don't want it to get overlooked. Thanks.

shadowfoxx, I already submitted a fix for this precise bug (see comment 54), and it was merged upstream:

Well, I was trying to wait until the final release of Lucid before installing it...but I now have the lucid beta installed. I upgraded to lucid beta on post #56 at the request of brad fig on post #55.. but unfortunately the fix must not be on it yet. I'm still learning about ubuntu and linux in general so I apologize in advance for my shortcomings. I appreciate all your help.
Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote : | #85 |
No, the fix is not present in Lucid's kernel yet. In comment 83 I noted that I have [today] requested that the fixed be merged into the next stable release of 2.6.32 [I couldn't find an e-mail address for you else I would have Cced you on the request to stable@kernel], so the fix will end up in a Lucid kernel eventually. Of course, since the fix has already been merged upstream (in December), you can also use linux-alsa-
