Bug Description
Ubuntu 9.10
sound card: Asus Xonar DX
alsa 1.0.20-2ubuntu6
Whenever I adjust the sound through the gnome volume bar, the sound starts to crackle, and sometimes stop completely.
The sound cracks a bit when adjusting it in alsamixe. Usually just a hardly noticeable pop or two. Whenever I use the gnome volume bar, the sound tends to get really bad. Usually it starts by getting very distorted for about a second, then there will be a few seconds with practically no sound (usually a few pops), then sound comes back on with lots of distortion and the distortion fades away within about a second. It last around 5 seconds to over a minutes whenever I changed my volume.
The length of time the volume stops, or is distorted depends on how much I move the bar. if I drag it from 100% to 25%, I can expect over a minute wait before I can hear sound again.
This does not happen when I adjust the volume through Rythmbox, Movie Player or VLC player.
If I leave the volume in the gnome bar alone, the sound remains clear.

This symptom is likely due to the MMX code in PulseAudio as shipped in 9.10,
not the sound driver. Please change this bug to affect pulseaudio instead.
