Bug Description

Equipment:
HTC Hero (Updated to latest firmware on October 1)

To reproduce the problem:
1. From the Astrid widget on the home screen I click on it.
2. From within a view of tasks associated to a single tag e.g. "Personal". Click Menu >> Sort/Filters >> uncheck the tag that is being viewed.

What should I see?
All tasks except those with tags that begin with an underscore, e.g., _shoppinglist.

What do I see?
It hangs forever displaying "Loading..." until I hit Menu >> Tags. Then I can see my tags and thus see all tasks associated with one tag only.

When did the start?
It started when I started using tags for Astrid. When I had all untagged tasks I had no problem.

Phil,
Thanks for this input. We are looking at putting out more support on this
and bugs in the next couple weeks. With so many Android handsets coming out
testing all cases is becoming a larger issue so your reporting this is very
helpful.

Warmly,

Phil,

Unchecking the "tagged 'xyz'" filter in the display/filters menu will clear that filter, which means all tasks will be displayed, instead of that one particular tag. There is no mechanism for displaying "all tags except xyz".

As for showing you the "Loading" menu forever, that sounds like a bug. Is this reproducible?

Tim,

*As for showing you the "Loading" menu forever, that sounds like a bug. Is
this reproducible?*
I don't have another phone to reproduce it. However on the same phone it
always happens.

*There is no mechanism for displaying "all tags except xyz".*
What happens is that I see my widget that something is due (it's in red). I
really like this widget. I then click the widget and enter into Astrid.
Sometimes it hangs forever saying "Loading...". Other times it sends me to a
particular tag. What I would like to happen is to see all tags (except
underscored ones*), but especially the ones that are due. This would be much
better than wasting time thinking "What tag was that red one under?".
Perhaps it is asking too much, but it would be really nice.

*my underscored tags are for shopping lists and other things like that I
only want to see at a single time and no other.

I am seeing the same "Loading..." issue as of just the last couple days, though I have only started using the widget since last week. I am using Donut 1.6 on a myTouch with the latest version of Astrid.

I can reproduce it consistently:

Restart the phone (just to have a clean slate). Click on the widget (or the astrid app button - it does not seem to matter for me) - you will get the black screen with "Loading..." up at the top and it never finishes.

I also have found that I can select a specific tag to view and it works fine; you just can't see everything at once (no specific tag).

Maybe if I get too frustrated I will get off my ass and see if I can fix it myself... not sure if you have opensource or not, I will have to go check.

This is the first issue I have run into. Great app!

Unmodded HTC Hero, Astrid 2.9.2 (how do I get 2.10.0 if the Market shows me Astrid as up-to-date?).

You need to install the apk from our launchpad.net/astrid instead of
downloading it from the market. In order to get it on your phone you will
need to (plug in to your phone into you computer and copy the file into the
downloads directory on the phone). Then you can use the App Installer
application from the market to install Astrid 2.10.0. We are scheduled to
release the next version of Astrid later this week but would love more
testing before this.

Ok. I think I understand what's happening. If one of you who are experiencing this problem can do the following, that would be great.

If you have the Android SDK on your computer and adb works, then:

1) hook up your phone to your computer. From your computer, run "adb logcat"
2) Open up Astrid, make it hang on the loading screen (it shouldn't take more than a few seconds to load)
3) Check the logcat window for any exceptions thrown. If in doubt, send me the whole thing

If you don't have the Android SDK,

1) from your phone, go to this URL, download and install LogCat: http://code.google.com/p/openintents/downloads/detail?name=Logcat.apk
2) Open Astrid, reproduce the loading forever screen
3) Now switch to Logcat, click Menu => Save to SD Card. It will save to your sd card under the name logcat-xxxxxxx
4) using ASTRO or some other file manager, e-mail the file to me. You can also mount your SD card as if you were copying your photos, and e-mail me the log from your computer.

Please send it to <email address hidden> and don't post it here, it (usually won't but) might contain sensitive information. Thanks.

(if you're curious, if an error is encountered while task loading occurs, Astrid will get stuck in loading tasks mode)

FWIW, I also can’t access tasks from the notification area; if there’s an Astrid task there and I select it to go to that task’s screen in Astrid, I end up on an infinitely ‘Loading…’ screen as well.

Similar issue reported by a user to dev.astrid

From two days ago, I'm not able to launch the app. When I touch the Astrid logo, the application launches but not the tasks. I only can read "cargando..." ("launching...") on the screen. I also can see the box in which we can add a new task. But when doing this -adding a task-, the screen still remain black and the text I can read is "actualizando lista..." ("refreshing list..."). How must I do for fixing it?
Thanks a lot, and if my english is not good enogh, just tell it to me... I'll explain it again... I need my tasks back...

__
Actualization of problem...

Ten minutes ago, I've tried to connect Astrid again. What happend is what I told you the mail before. Then, I had the "great" idea of trying "Sinchronize". Now, the messaged I was able to read was "Astrid no está respondiendo" (Astrid is not responding). I "clicked" OK and then Astrid began "Sincronización en remotos" (remote sinchronization). All my title tasks appeared as a progress bar was increasing. But then, suddenly, all this progress stopped and appeared this message: (I translate...)

    Synchronization error!
    Apologize for the inconveniences!
    Error: java.lang.
    NullPointerException - com.
    timsu.astrid.sync.
    SunchronizationProvider.
    synchoronizeTasks(Synchronizati
    onProvider.java:257)

After this disappointment fact, and seeing that Astrid still was "refreshing list", I tryed sinchronization again and... what happend is that after synchronization, the number of tasks I was able to find were a quarter of the total i had before! So, I closed Astrid and tried to enter again... and Astrid showed (again!) "refreshing list" message.

This happens for me too, and I think I have some further information that may prove useful.

I used to use only one tag, "Today", so that I effectively had a short list of things to do now-ish. Recently, I moved a bunch of tasks from my gmail tasks list into Astrid, creating many more tags in the process. It was around this point that I began to notice the problem that everybody has described above (simply "launch astrid, note that it just says 'loading...' for ever, but you can still view by individual tags"). At this point I assumed the bug was somehow related to having either lots of tags (I have about 10 now) or lots of tasks (I have about 30).

But recently I noticed something interesting that may shed some light on the bug: I said above that I can (like most people who've spoken here) view my tasks by individual tag without a problem. I realise now that I can do this for all but one tag, my tag called "Today". Now that I notice this I can recall adding a new task to the "Today" tag (from within the "Today" view, so it automatically got the "Today" tag) and it didn't seem to appear in the list afterwards, and when I went hunting for the new item I couldn't find it in the main list either (because the main list would just say "Loading...", but I can't be certain that this was the first time this occurred).

So, my theory is, that something may be going wrong in the adding of a new task, whether it be tagged or not, and when you go to view the list of tasks (either all tags, or just the list of tasks tagged with the same tag as the problem one you tried to create), you'll get the "Loading..." freeze.

Here is the output from "logcat" for me:

Hi everyone!

I recently noticed the same bug as well. There are more than one way to end up with the bug, as others have described it by viewing a particular tag and then using the filter settings to remove the filter.

You may also select to view a certain tag and then press the backarrow button to return to the previous screen where all the tags are visible. Then another press should take you to the screen where all tasks are shown but then it seems to hang.

Restarting Astrid does not help, it just hangs there with the text "Loading..." on screen. Restarting the whole phone has no effect once Astrid is started again the same symptoms occur.

It is however still possible to use the menu and view any of the tags, that works fine.

Syncing does throw an exception as described in other posts if yo do it from the hang screen but seems to work at least occasionally when viewing a specific tag.

This application is really really great but this problem is annoying please fix it soon.

<b>Workarounds I have found so far:</B>

Tag all tasks with an "all" tag, then select to view this tag and you will see all tasks again.

Uninstall, then reinstall Astrid, then when you have set it up to sync with RTM it will show all tasks again. Just don't select to view a specific task and you are fine.

Can we please bump up the importance of this one? It's driving me crazy. I have one tag I can't view in addition to the "all tasks" list, and this means I'm forgetting some tasks because they're in the tag I can't access.

Astrid is almost unusable for me at the moment because 1) I'm forgetting a few tasks because they're inaccessible and 2) Reminders are useless because clicking on them from the notification area just sends me to the frozen "Loading..." screen.

> Status in Astrid - Android's Task/Todo Manager: Fix Released
>
> Bug description:
>
>
> All tasks except those with tags that begin with an underscore, e.g.,
> _shoppinglist.
>
> What do I see?
> It hangs forever displaying "Loading..." until I hit Menu >> Tags. Then I
> can see my tags and thus see all tasks associated with one tag only.
>
> When did the start?
> It started when I started using tags for Astrid. When I had all untagged
> tasks I had no problem.
