Bug Description

Binary package hint: j2re1.4

j2re1.4 will not install on a espresso install of Dapper by apt-get install. Sun-j2re1.5 also will not install this way.

Both install fine on a text based install of Dapper through apt-get install.

These packages will install through synaptic. I believe it has to do with the license dialog since none of these packages display the licenses through apt. However the licenses do appear when using synaptic.

Here is the terminal output for j2re1.4

test@test-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install j2re1.4

If the license doesn't appear when using apt-get, do:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure debconf

and select "dialog".

Thank you for this information. It works perfectly. I will post this on Ubuntu forums so other users know what is going on.

Phillip

This is still an outstanding bug with all softwares that have proprietary licenses (The ones that have come to my notice are the following: sun-java5-jre, sun-java5-jdk j2re1.4 and flashplugin-nonfree).

They can be installed from synaptic, but cannot be installed from apt-get because it does not default to "dialog" on its own which it should.

The fix (of reconfiguring debconf) should not be left to users to figure out.

Please fix this bug ASAP.

I see no need for me or anyone else to have to manually use the command dpkg-reconfigure debconf just to install something as necessary as java.

Although it's jsut an annoyance to me i'm sure tons of people wont even be able to figure out why there java or anyhting with that kind of license won't isntall for them.

The debconf/frontend=Noninteractive problem will be fixed in the final release desktop CDs.

j2re1.4 has a different issue from sun-java5; it doesn't even try to handle db_input failing at all.

flashplugin-nonfree also has the same license issue on espresso installs. Please correct this bug as well.
