Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

The screen flickers/jumps both when Ubuntu is booting and in the OS itself. It looks like the screen image jumps a cm up and then down again every ½ second. Sometimes it helps rebooting and sometimes not (it doesn't happen every time I boot) . It also looks like it stops when the CPU works hard on something. I also found the bug #445379 talking about something simulare, but there isn't a lot of info in the report. I also get black screen for about 2 sec. and then its back to normal.

I can see the bug has been moved to the fglrx-installer section but it also happend when I used the open source driver.
I have to say that I have had more flicker in the OS now that I have changed to the ATI driver. It is another kind of flicker. The image on the screen doesn't jump but the image flickers like a bad connection in the cables (but the isn't one).
So the problem can't be fglrx specific but must be from a subsystem that both the open source and ATI driver uses.

I found the problem! Apparently my motherboard has some design flaw. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H.
I read that it helps to Onboard VGA Output Support option in the Advanced section of the bios and set it to D-Sub/HDMI, but I have not tried it yet myself.

So no software problem. Bug closed.

This bug can be closed because the problem is an error on my motherboard and not in Ubuntu. The problem is also on Windows.
