Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Jaunty gave me 85 Hz refresh rates and resolutions higher then 1024x768

Karmic beta restricts me to 1024x768x75 & lower

At 75 Hz I can still see the monitor flickering,

which hurts my eyes, & actually causes me to tire faster and stop my work on my PC.

Apparently, the new automatic probes for resolutions & refresh rates

do not accurately represent the capabilities of both the monitor or the graphics card.

xserver-xorg-video-intel drivers default back to vesa and framebuffer probing.

the xorg.conf file shows a search for intel-i810 drivers which of course were

replaced by the xserver-xorg-video-intel drivers.

Possible other side-effects are: black frame-shadows around all windows and

icons, perhaps this is supposed to emulate a 3D effect (unable to alter this effect)

also, for some strange reason all desktop icons, as well as folders in nautilus,

now have a green check-mark attached to them.

I am also unable to properly shut down my system.

I can either use BUM & sysV-rc-conf to shut down the PC when selecting reboot,

or make reboot work, but then am unable to fully shut down.

I believe in YOU to fix these annoyances soon, maybe my input is some help to you.

Searching the forums and bug reports, evidently 1000s of users are experiencing

similar or related bugs.

Of course, that is to be expected with a beta version.

Thank YOU for your hard work and YOUR genius in developing Ubuntu.

correction:

it is the Xorg.0.log file (not the xorg.conf file)

Karmic beta appears not to create an xorg.conf file.

I do not know where Karmic beta writes it's xorg configuration to or if it does so at all!?

newest developments:

the latest partial ugrades & updates of Oct 13, 7pm, 2009:

seems to have removed the black shadow frames around windows, icons & apps,

as well as the perculiar green check mark on folders & icons.

A definite improvement!

Boot up speed has also increased, perhaps due to todays newer kernel update.

however resolutions & refresh rates have yet to be fixed, as I am sure they will.

failure of printer detection is a new bug to me, however not related to xserver-xorg.

Keep up the good work guys!

Karmic Koala will be better then Jaunty, without having to throw millions of dollars at it,

the Ubuntu guys (& gals) have created something that will be better,

& definitely less time consuming & inexpensive then Windows ? (7?) ..., I mean Vista SP3!

Addendum:

Lucid Lynx Alpha (2.6.32-10-generic kernel)

With a Dell E771a CRT Monitor,

and Intel 82G35 (G3500) Integrated Graphics,

allows up to 1280x1024 at 60 Hz

also 1024x768 at 85 Hz,

however it does not use the proper

specs for that mode.

The monitor goes black or blank.

The Dell E771a preset display modes

include 1024x768 (vesa specs):

Horizontal 68.7 kHz - vertical 85.0kHz

Pixel Clock 94.5 Mhz

Sync Polarity (Horizontal/Vertical) +/+

Resolution:
Horizontal scan range 31 kHz to 70 kHz (automatic)
Vertical scan range 50 Hz to 160 Hz (automatic)
Optimal preset resolution 1024 x 768 at 75 Hz
Highest preset resolution 1024 x 768 at 85 Hz
Highest addressable resolution* 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz
* Addressable means the monitor will sync up to this mode. However, Dell does not guarantee the image will
be sized and centered correctly.

Up to now, in lucid alpha3 and Karmic, I still cannot get 1024x786 by 85Hz

The vertical synch range = 50-160 Hz

The horizontal synch range = 31-70 kHz

Monitor = Dell E771a

Video integrated device = Intel Corporation 82G35 Express Integrated
